Which are your Top Five "Raw" Fruits on this list?

Please refer to Pre-Poll Data Collecting – What’s your Favorite “raw” fruit? and What’s your Favorite “raw” fruit? for how this list of 20 fruits was developed.

The order of this list is by the frequency of votes of those fruits that had at least 10% of the vote total.

This public poll will make it possible for you to pick your Top Five fruits from the list. If you pick more than 5, only the top five will be used in the tally. An additional poll will be made from the responses here and there may be at least one additional poll after that to determine a “booby prize” by some method yet to be determined.

Please select your Top Five Favorites in the upcoming poll that is on its way…

Most people consider tomatoes to be vegetables.

Yes, and I’m one of them.

It may make for a fun look-back sometime in the future, but after 10 responses these were the top vote-getters:

peaches
grapes
apples
strawberries
bananas
pineapple
raspberries
cantaloupe

and poor

tangerines had yet to receive a vote!

It’s also going to be fun to compare the TOP Five with how they stacked up in that first poll with unlimited voting options.

Can we talk up the concept of the booby prize this early?

You forgot grapefruit, so I picked oranges instead.

When you say “berries” do you mean: straw, blue, rasp, black, goose, cran, etc…?

'Cause, yeah. Love 'em all.

Correction: I didn’t forget: grapefruit didn’t make the 10% cutoff.

It was a category that had enough votes to make the list.

One of my votes was for raspberries, but I really dislike the ones I find in the stores. Big, pretty, very little flavor. It’s as if raspberry growers looked across at the apple aisle, saw the Red Delicious apples, and said, “that’s what we want to replicate with raspberries.”

The raspberries that grow wild in the mid-Atlantic are a whole 'nother - and much better - thing. They’re smaller and a hell of a lot tastier. They’re also known as wineberries.

Those are the ones I voted for.

So much of the fruit I find in most grocery stores is completely devoid of any flavour anymore. It’s quite sad, really. But every now and then you get a great bunch of berries or peaches or what have you, and it makes it all worth while. Sometimes, the trick is let them fully ripen for a few days on the counter. <He says as he plucks another tasteless cherry from the bowl.> :frowning:

On the whole, it’s better than it used to be. I think more shoppers are getting more selective, and there’s competition from roadside stands and farmers’ markets when fruit and veggies are in season.

For instance, there are a lot more varieties of apples even in places like Food Lion than there used to be. Once apple season is over locally, I’ll buy Pink Lady apples at the store, and they’re really pretty good. (And I’ll think of Helen Gahagan Douglas every time I buy them, too. :))

Thanks to everyone who voted in this poll! Here’s how things turned out after 50 Voters:

Multiple Choice Poll. Voters: 50

===============================================

What I think will be the last poll in this project – unless and until we decide what would make for a fun “Booby prize” – is to use the Top 13 (those with at least 10 votes) and have a ONE VOTE Private poll to determine the real preferences of those who choose to participate.

I’m open to suggestions on improvements to that idea, but only using this group of 20 fruits in the final poll.

If anybody want to construct another poll/thread using any of the results in the threads I started, I have no problem with that.

I’ll wait until Friday to post my Final Poll of the series – unless the booby prize issue gets sorted out.

Thanks again, all!

I said clementine, but only because satsuma wasn’t on the list (clementines are ok, but I prefer satsumas, especially around Christmas).

I would have picked apples, but my fave are Discoveries, which show up only for about four weeks in late summer.

Preferences: home grown on the allotment (strawberries, raspberries) or from the fruiterers, especially in season. (US supermarket fruit is awful – bright and shiny, but tasteless).

list needs grapefruit

Grapefruit was there in earlier rounds, but didn’t get enough votes to advance. Sorry.

Perhaps this could be the start of the “Booby Prize” criteria. Look over the results of What’s your Favorite “raw” fruit? and see how the fruits that didn’t “advance” might be the subject of such a “second tier” voting.

I’m open to any suggestions here, seriously.

So I suppose I am the only here who has never heard of a clementine? In fact the only thing which comes to mind is “My Darling, Clementine”

I’m being pedantic, I know, but I can’t vote in this poll because the categories are too large. Is my favorite raw fruit an apple? That depends on what kind - Honeycrisp? Absolutely in the top 5! Red Delicious? Nope, wouldn’t even make the top 50. Same with peaches, bannanas (the ones we commonly get in the US are the most bland variety in existence), watermelons, pears, mangos and pineapples. I need details, man!

Do feel free to start a thread with more details. One has already been suggested for Apples Varieties as well as for Exotic Fruits. “Berries” made it as an option even though there were several specific berries in the list.

This has been User Participating venture. If things need more precision, go for it.

Oh, no, you misunderstand! I don’t want to work to make it better, I just want to complain!

Aha! The sacred right of every American! Bitch away!
