I think the key to Hank Pym is that he keeps wanting to redeem himself, because he’s under the delusion that he’s a superhero. Everyone else just goes along with it, because they’re scared that one day, he’ll wake up and realise that he’s actually a comic book Mad Scientist, and he knows where they live.
Yeah, Hawkeye really only works as part of a team – which seems to be what the movies will be doing with him.
I agree. The key trait of the original Hawkeye is he’s an ex-villain. The key trait of the Ultimate Hawkeye is he’s a black ops agent. In both cases he represents something that makes the other Avengers distrust him. But as a solo character, there’s no other characters to feel that mistrust.
Why hasn’t there been a Hawkeye or a Green Arrow movie yet? They’re not widely-known characters, but neither was the Punisher or Judge Dredd. The whole modern-day Robin Hood idea seems like it would be a no-brainer. With today’s CGI, they could do boxing-glove arrows and probably even model Oliver Queen’s beard.
I’m guessing the DC universe rights are tied up for a while. Numerous DC heroes have appeared on Smallville, including Green Arrow (Oliver Queen was a major character over several seasons).
I think that both Hawkeye and Green Arrow could have movies of their own. With the right kind of script, either one of them could work well.
Unfortunately, they don’t have the same iconic status as other, more familiar heroes. That’s not stopping Thor from having his own movie, but then again, Thor has the weight of Norse mythology backing him up.
Also, both characters do work best within teams. Hawkeye was at his best within the Avengers and with Mockingbird. GA worked best within the JLA and alongside Black Canary. (The latter frustrated me, since I always felt that the Canary deserved to emerge from within GA’s shadow.)
Starfox. Same name as an old 1980’s video game, so not as trademarkable; kind of a convoluted backstory; powers the opposite of flashy; created by Starlin, not Lee nor Kirby.
One of the first comic series I bought for myself. Very early Peter David, snappy dialogue, & why I don’t dismiss the Wasp out of hand.
Thanks for the link. I’ve read way too many Steve Gerber comics to tell that was a joke without that pothole.
Arguably she did with the Birds of Prey comics, though sometimes she’s in Barbara Gordon’s shadow. (For those who don’t know, BoP pretty much turned into paraplegic ex-Batgirl team-up after a while.)
Thanks to** Fenris **and Don Draper. That’s the kind of answers I was looking for when asking the question. Though, come to think of it, what really started the question in my mind was a rereading of an old issue of the West Coast Advengers while thinking about the Captain America/Thor movies coming out.
I loved Englehart’s WCO, and there was one character in it that I really liked.
And that was Wonder Man Wonder Man - Wikipedia .
But, Christ, how in Hell would you sell a movie about a guy that looks like the bastard child of Cyclops and Superman. Though the character was really original, I just couldnt see how any movie translation of that character wouldnt still have “knock-off” written all over him.
P.S: I’ve always had a liking for that specific kind of brooding melancholic SHs, I’m thinking of Daredevil, Cyclops or Wonder Man. And those three all have huge sunglasses. Does this lack of eye contact with the character (or maybe the glasses eating up a bit portion of the face) inevitably lead him be/feel moody or tragic?
