See, I’d go with Djimon Hounsou.
Voted for Vision and the Wasp. We sorta already saw Viz in the Cap movie (in his previous incarnation as the WWII Human Torch*). Definitely need another woman on the team so the Wasp would be a welcome addition. Wouldn’t mind Black Panther - he’d make an excellent foil for Fury.
- Or did they do away with that? I don’t remember.
Always cool to see lots of other heroes but let’s hope they learned something from the X-Men movies - it can be too much of a good thing!
I’d miss the Hulk but they could lose him. Never been much of a Hawkeye fan either.
Luke Cage would be a cool addition as well as providing a mid-range power between the normals and the supers.
Was going to put forth the Jarvis/Ultron idea but someone beat me to it!
Actually The Avengers could use some Hispanic characters. Firebird anyone? Or maybe the White Tiger. I’m sure Robert Rodriguez could make one of these movies for peanuts!
Wait, I’d really like to see the Jack of Hearts…
Hercules.
This is why fanboys should never be listened to when planning a movie.
For any of these characters to be introduced, they would effectively need their own prequel movie. Otherwise A2 would be that movie, and a complete waste of time. It’s crowded enough already. Trying to balance ethnicity or sex ratio is also a waste of time. The story is the thing, and they can’t tell everybody’s story. The choice of characters has been made. Live with it. No Spiderman, no Wasp, no Scarlet Witch, no Black Panther. The next villain will be who it is (hopefully played by Alexis Denisof, as it was this time) and the team will develop as a team further than they did this time. Then at the end of A2 they will be fragmented, with some serious issues raised between them. They will have to overcome these issues in A3 (expect serious sacrifice and probably a dead character) until in the end they triumph. Then nothing for 5 years or so, until Marvel reboots the franchise. Rinse, lather, repeat.
Better luck with character selection on the reboot.
“This is the latest S.H.I.E.L.D. artificial intelligence project, codename: Vision. He’s on your team now.”
Anyway, it’s not at all true that the next member needs his or her own prequel movie (Hawkeye had like two minutes in Thor to establish him, and all we knew about him before Avengers was “works for S.H.I.E.L.D., shoots arrows,” which Avengers could have established itself). More to the point, I cannot imagine that Avengers is the franchise wherein Hollywood will suddenly reverse its trend of cramming as many characters as possible into superhero movie sequels. There will be at least one new member, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see two.
I’d take Ant-Man and Wasp off the table for the time being, since an Ant-Man movie is in development.
My top guess: Ms. Marvel (probably under her new codename - “Captain Marvel”). Firstly, the team needs another woman, and needs a woman with superpowers. Secondly, she has a stupid origin that doesn’t really matter, can be altered in any number of ways, could be skipped entirely, and amounts to “aliens happened.” It’s easily adaptable to whatever they do in Avengers 2. Thirdly, there’s a ton of stuff to draw from the comics with Carol Danvers and S.H.I.E.L.D., and as a foil for Iron Man.
Spider-man would be awesome, but the movie rights are currently owned by Sony.
Agreed, pragmatism is a must here. Like the comics though, I wouldn’t mind if characters came and went and it’s fun debating who you’d like to see. Cap should always be there, as should Iron Man, but the Hulk isn’t really a team player and Thor sometimes has other responsibilities in Asgard. Hawkeye and Widow are disposable as far as I’m concerned. That said, the number of new characters per movie should be limited to one or two…the ones I mentioned I think would be good, sensible choices. No one too outlandish and a little diversity wouldn’t hurt.
The only dissapointment for me in the current movie was the absence of Black Panther - he was one of my fav’s as a kid.
I wouldn’t mind seeing other characters introduced in the next film, but I’d want the main action to stay with the team that we have.
Get rid of the hulk, add She-Hulk.
It’s a pretty busy roster already, but I think you could add another member or two and I think people have already had some good ideas like Luke Cage, Ms. Marvel, She Hulk and Black Panther, and Scarlett Witch.
Pym could work as a scientist working for SHIELD or for Stark and becomes a reluctant hero who steps up when he discovers his Pym Particles, but is more comfortable doing the scientist thing. Maybe the Wasp is an investor for Stark Intl. or financial advisor for SHIELD or something and drags her husband into being a hero because she’s tired of being only a socialite.
Black Panther would be good as it would introduce a bigger world and stuff. She Hulk and Ms. (Captain) Marvel would be good to have a super strong female hero – Ms. Marvel would be good as the flying brick. Scarlett Witch would work and her magic wouldn’t be too powerful in the movie I would think.
Another thought, and I’m probably the only guy in the world who would want to see this, but Wonder Man would be a good storyline. You can reintroduce Hydra and maybe include AIM. Grimm Reaper can meatball his brother into becoming Wonder Man to get back at Stark or the Avengers. He thrashes the team until he’s chased away by Hulk or something, then finally turns on his brother and helps the Avengers. This would give a good terrestrial threat instead of an otherworldy one such as Thanos (don’t get me wrong – fighting Thanos would indeed be great, but the Avengers just fought an extraterrestrial threat) as well as establish an evil counterpart to SHIELD. Every good guy team needs and evil counterpart and MODOK could be in there somewhere, but he’s also pretty outlandish so there would have to be a way to reign that in a bit and not make him cheesey or campy.
She-Hulk would be awful. I’m not saying she should never get a movie, but it should be a movie people are seeing because of She-Hulk. Her tone is all wrong for the Avengers.
Black Panther and Giant-Man would both have to completely avoid their best known portrayals (Black Panther as a racist douchebag after Hudlin’s own heart, and Giant-Man as an eternally wife-beating bastard).
I would love to see the Wasp and Ms. Marvel. I would also like to see the Vision. I wouldn’t mind if they threw in Hank Pym, too, but if you only have one tiny insect-size character, I would rather it be the Wasp!
I can’t help but feel that they should stick with the current line up, as it seemed to work so well. I don’t want to see the sort of constant tinkering that blighted the X-men films, in an effort to get as many characters in as possible.
However, there are still plenty of other characters who would be worth having in a movie, so I’m proposing…
West Coast Avengers : The Movie
I’m raising my eyebrow at Giant Man and Black Panther even having “best-known” portrayals. To the extent that they do, Black Pather’s is probably, like, the currently-running Avengers cartoon, which is about the most exposure he’s ever had. Likewise Giant Man, really.
Another problem with War Machine is that he’s horribly outdated by now. Rhody’s using the Mark II suit, which Stark had already given up on in the first movie. As of this movie, Stark’s now up to the Mark VII. There’s no way a gatling gun mounted on his shoulder makes up for that.
And if they were to give up anyone, I’d prefer to give up Thor. Hawkeye would be a more logical choice in some ways, but we haven’t really seen enough of him yet. Give him a chance.
Black Panther might be the best choice for a new character simply for diversity reasons. No, not because he’s black, but because he’s not American. For supposedly being the Earth’s mightiest heroes, it’s an awfully USA-centered team: You’ve got four Americans (one of whom makes that the whole basis of his identity), one Russian-turned-American, and one non-human who’s shacking up with an American.
I am of two minds as to the resolution of this question.
First, based upon my extensive immersion in the Marvel Universe, I would be remiss in not noting that the roster has changed many times over the years. However, since that span of years reaches back to September 1963 (well nigh FIFTY years), and one assumes that the next movie will occur (in Marvel Universe continuity) within 6 months of the last one, then perhaps a roster change at this point is premature.
On the other hand (um… mind), recent Hollywood thinking (such as it is) dictates that new characters equals new fans equals better box office returns. So, we should expect the injection of two new characters. They should be a duo, so Hank and Janet or Pietro and Wanda.
If it is Hank and Janet, I suggest it be from when they are still unmarried lovers. Perhaps in that way we can retcon the wife-beating into a pocket Universe.
Pietro and Wanda are harder to fit in. Their Magneto origin makes it hard to disengage them from the X-Men franchise and therefore the powers that be might nix the idea from the start.
Hank wasn’t supposed to be a wife beater though, at least not in the mainstream Marvel Universe: Hank Pym was Not a Wife-Beater – JimShooter.com
As for the Ultimates, I never liked them all that much anyway. They’re all a buncha jerks.
