Which Avengers should assemble in the sequel?

Now, that is an excellent idea! Brilliant casting!

I can’t remember if he was ever an Avenger before but I would really like to see Dr. Strange added to the team. But only if they got the right actor. I’m not sure who that is, but I’m sure I would know who it isn’t. Doc Strange has always been one of my favorite Marvel superheroes.

As far as I know, he’s an Avenger right now!

Oded Fehr?

BetsQ, Hawkeye and Black Widow were likewise obscure character, and it didn’t stop them from being in this movie. You’re right, of course, that the core cast should stay mostly the same, but there’s still room to add one or two new, I think.

Ooh, him I could see for sure. Is he the one? I haven’t been following the casting or the movie at all, really.

No votes for Batman?

Yeah, yeah, I know…

I don’t think the powers that be have said anything about the actor or the character; I just couldn’t resist replying to your post with a bit of conjecture.

Do you recall when that was said? I must of missed it and would like to listen out when I see the movie again.

It’s shortly after Stark and Banner have met, in response to the bit about needing to heat the Cube up to a hundred million degrees, or whatever it was. I don’t recall the exact line.

Thank you for that insight. I had not realized that “**y Avengers #16, no members who had appeared in Avengers #1 were still a part of the team.” That is rather amazing when you come to think about it. How long in MU time do you imagine that was? 4 weeks? 6 weeks?

I think, for the second movie at least, they should keep the same 6. This movie was definitely just a “gathering” of the first heroes and there’s plenty of stories to tell of interpersonal problems between the same heroes.

If they really need to leave someone out, I think Hulk and Thor make the most sense. They’re the ones who often get left out of Avengers stories (largely due to their power levels being far higher than the others’) and there are plenty of “bruiser” characters who could take their place (Luke Cage, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, etc).

This got me thinking though… I know there’s no way to do it with the rights being held by other movie studios, but assuming they save

Thanos

for the third movie, they could have the second one’s after credits teaser with Nick Fury finding out about the threat, and finding some new superheroes to add to his roster… and having guys like Spider-Man or Wolverine appear. (Even if they weren’t going to be in the third, kinda like War Machine in this one). I wonder if they could do that - just have Hugh Jackman show up and not identify him by name/outfit? (Like X-Men: First Class?) Would be a field day for the lawyers at least…

Speaking as someone who does not follow the comic books, I can not imagine She-Hulk not getting laughed off the screen by mainstream audiences.

I don’t know how awesome she may or may not be in the comic books, but beyond core comic book fans I can only imagine audiences deriding her as ridiculous before the movie even has a chance to present a case for her.

Yeah, most of her comics aren’t played straight either. She’s known for breaking the fourth wall. I wouldn’t want her in a sequel.

You really think ‘hot woman with superstrength and a sense of humour’ will get laughed off the screen?

It’s actually kind of depressing to think that might be true.

But it’s absolutely shocking Whedon didn’t put her in in the first place - she’s got all his primary character keys - she’s female, she’s witty, she kicks ass and takes names (unlike her cousin who kicks ass and can hardly say his own name), and she’s gorgeous.

I said “as someone who does not follow the comic books”.

I and everyone like me hears “She-Hulk” and thinks “Oh, a female version of The Hulk”. (Gee, wonder why we would think that.)
More than enough to prejudice us before any hypothetical future movie gets a chance to present a case in her favor.

You have to remember that this movie isn’t for comic geeks, it’s for the general public. If the character isn’t a part of the zeitgeist, it isn’t likely to appear except in a supporting role. So She-Hulk is a non-starter.

Except, of course, for the fact that the movie is called ‘Avengers’, not ‘She-Hulk’, so the first exposure to her will be her doing stuff.

Like talking at an adult level, not ‘Hulk Smash puny humans’, therefore in one line making herself 1000% more believable as a hero than her cousin.

To expound upon my above post . . .

As someone who doesn’t follow comic books, whenever I hear of a character that is the female version or boy version of a popularly established character my eyes nearly roll right out of my head.

Superman is super famous so someone says . . . hey, why not Supergirl???
Create a new character, lazy jerks. At least give the new character her own name. Another Kryptonian with the same powers as Superman (and I do not even know if that’s what Supergirl is)? Sure, I could accept that as a new character. But you kill it as soon as you name the character Supergirl.

I am told by some comics fans that Superboy is actually a really cool character in certain continuities but I just hear “Superboy” and I sigh.

Growing up with the 60s Batman T.V. show I was influenced at a young age to accept Batgirl, but in all fairness she’s no better than the rest.
If suspension of disbelief allows that a certain character got his powers one way then it follows that another character could have gone through the same experience resulting in similar powers but when you won’t so much as give that character an original name it just comes off as lazy and totally lame.

She got juiced on gamma radiation like the Hulk! We’ll call her She-Hulk!!!

C’mon. Lieutenant colonel James Rhodes becomes War Machine. He doesn’t become “Iron Black Man”.

I think the CG’s going to be the main factor working against She-Hulk. I have no problems with her, but the Hulk is essentially a giant beast that’s completely CG and just exists to smash things. He doesn’t talk much, doesn’t have to emote much, and audiences like that. She-Hulk as CG is going to be weird. Instead of a human actor, we’re going to have to get used to empathizing with a completely CG thing. It’ll just be too uncanny valley for me

A worse decision would be to have her be played by a big female bodybuilder. First, I don’t know any who can act. Second, no matter how big she is, she’ll look laughably puny next to CG Hulk. And last, and this is kind of petty, most guys in the audience will probably be turned off by a giant female bodybuilder

It’s too bad the impression of She-Hulk is “basically a female version of Hulk” because she is a great character in her own right but I can understand the thinking there if you haven’t read the original stories.

Coulson as the Vision would be a fitting move.
