Which beer is best then?

Nope. Coors Light was my starter beer, but once I got used to it, I graduated to Shiner.

I’ll admit that a fair part of the appeal of Shiner is emotional. Like zagloba said, there’s an attachment that’s part flavor and part nostalgia. In other words, I’ll always love me some Shiner.

While I appreciate the offer to save me from myself, I must consider the source, Mr. “City Thai’s pretty good.”

You’re both taking that out of context and misquoting it, Counselor. If it pleases the court, I’d like to have the defendant’s original statement read into the record:

and I would like to further note that this statement was made with respect to other Thai restaurants located on or about Colorado Avenue of which, I believe no one may disagree, none demonstrates any measure of distinction or especial appeal. I beg the court to reconsider the mitigating factors–i.e. the general poor quality of restaurants in that vicinity against which to compare–when determining sentence for the defendent.

And Corona is still awful. Just…awful. :stuck_out_tongue:

And, considering the clear glass bottles, usually skunked.

Fischer LaBelle Strasbourgeoise. I’m pissed that they don’t sell it in Minnesota anymore, only Fischer Amber. Any Easy Coast dopers with a paypal account and some free time out there?

Mea culpa.

Et tu, Brute?

Current faves are MacTarnahan’s Brown Ale, Mirror Pond Pale, and just about anything from Lucky Lab Brew Pub ( a local).
A recent fad with many of the great microbreweries we enjoy here is light ales that are intensely over-hopped, even to the point of additional filtering through raw hops as they’re drawn from the keg. Definitely not my style, but if you like really hoppy beer, I understand it’s the bee’s knees.

I don’t know what it tasted like back then, but I had some in July and it’s far and above my favorite beer.

Other than that, I like Leinenkugels Oktoberfest and Guiness.

I prefer amber ales over anything - first choice would be Bridgeport Ropewalk or Widmer Bros. Drop Top. If I can’t get either of those, a MacTarnahan’s Scottish Ale or Full Sail Amber Ale, and my backup (the easiest one to find) is New Belgium Fat Tire. (I try my best to drink local  .)

I had Jubal Ale (seasonal) the other day that was mighty fine - don’t recall the brewery.

For Mexican, my first choice is Dos Equis Amber, second is Pacifico. Corona doesn’t make the cut.

The only Hefe I like very much is Pyramid’s. They have a nice Apricot Ale, too, but it can get a little cloying - you have to be in the right mood for it.

Oregon Honey Beer is another one I like, but haven’t found in ages, at least not on tap.

Newcastle Brown is ok. Chimay Red is wonderful - I can’t even imagine how much better a Blue must be…

Heya! Try San Miguel Beer!Pale Pilsen…The bestest beer ever!

I’m not too much of a beer snob but I hate shitty, tasteless beer. Among my favorites are

Shiner Bock - on tap here everyplace in San Antonio
Young’s Oatmeal Stout
Newcastle Brown
Grimbergen Double - Belgian and I haven’t found it in ages

I loved Killian’s Red Ale as it was originally introduced in the early '80s. This isn’t the Killian’s Irish Red Lager they sell now. The ale was somewhat more robust and a distinct flavor from the roasted grain, almost fried.

I found **Bass ** back in '94 when it was still rare. Now it is quite common and it is still my favorite. I have some in my fridge right now. It is tasty when warm or cold. I can sit out for an extended time without going flat.
**Sierra Nevada Pale Ale ** is excellent.

I enjoy Hacker Pschorr October Fest in season.

Jim

I know the person who sold the original Killian’s recipe to Coors. It was much better then.

For some reason (too much Sierra Nevada, I suppose) Bass just seems bland to me. Almost as bland as Newcastle. I live for hops. Anchor, SN, etc. are mother’s milk to me.

You are lucky to be such a Hoppy person.

What someone had to say it.

Didn’t they?

Well?

Jim

Hey. I got it.

I’m drinking wine tonight, but suddenly I’m craving a Young’s Chocolate Stout.

You would have to go say that AFTER Trader Joe’s (who carries Young’s Chocolate at a reasonable price) CLOSED for the evening. Now I have to go to the specialty store to find a bottle and pay through the nose for it. BAH! I was perfectly content with my Newcastle before that post.

silenus I tip my hat to you for your excelent taste, but shake my fist in rage at your horrible timing!
To the Vendome!

Sorry for the double post, after I posted I realized there were some other posts I hadn’t read yet, and I have a couple of questions.

Padeye :
Have you had Samuel Smiths Oatmeal Stout? How does it compare to the Young’s in your opinion. I like Smiths ok, enough to think I would like other Oatmeal Stouts, but am not crazy about it. What say you?

[slight hijack] Just noticed that you are local to me (kinda sorta). You ever go to Lucky Baldwins pub out there in Pasadena? If not do you know of other good beer bars in the (general) area, I am always on the lookout for a new place. I actually live in North Hollywood these days, but end up traveling out that way quite a bit and am always at a loss for places to go, so I end up at Lucky Baldwins. Which is fine, I like Lucky’s, but variety is the spice of life as they say.[/slight hijack]

Ok, now I am done, promise.

We try to drink (mostly) local beers (and wines), and we’re fortunate enough to have some great breweries in the area.

My list of favorites/regulars:

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale (Chico, CA) - A staple in our house. My co-worker and I call them ‘greenbacks.’ Our everyday beer. Great taste, refreshing, easy to find, even on tap, and reasonably priced. I honestly can’t believe we have never driven out there to do a tour. That’s going high on my weekend trip list.

Eye of the Hawk (Mendocino, CA) - We usually pick up a 6 pack or two every now and then, and almost always when we go camping. Since half of our cooler is usually filled with beer, a couple of six packs of Eye of the Hawk (with 8% ABV) saves a little space (one beer almost equals two!) - tastes great, and packs a nice punch. I actually like all of Mendocino Brewing Company’s beers, the Red Tail Ale and the Peregrine especially. We drive up to Mendocino a few times a year and always make a stop at the brewpub.

Pliny the Elder (Santa Rosa, CA-yay!) - Our absolute favorite. Super hoppy. The brewpub is just a couple of miles from our house and is our regular hangout here in town. Most of the beers at Russian River Brewing are excellent, I don’t think I’ve had one I don’t like. Their Belgian, Damnation, is now available in bottles and is my second favorite of theirs. They also make a triple IPA, Pliny the Younger, that they don’t always have on tap, but is mighty fine as well. My husband and I know a night out at RRBC usually ends with a cab ride home. They make some strong (and really delicious) beer!

Other favorites from this area include Red Rocket Ale, Red Seal Ale, and Lagunitas IPA. All really good and end up in our fridge or cooler or pitcher every now and then.

Guinness is high on our list, but it’s just so filling. Usually reserved for our nights crawling the Irish pubs in SF (usually accompanied by Troy McCLure SF.)

Dos Equis Amber is my favorite Mexican beer and one I’ve been having once every other week or so since a taqueria opened up across the street a few months ago.

I had a Boddington’s on tap for the first time last week and loved it. A new favorite.

Holy Smoke Scott Ale - Church Key Brewery
Guinness
John Sleeman
Alexander Keith’s
Canadian

in order of preference

Ever since my trip to Ukraine, I’ve been a sucker for unfiltered white beers (they had a FANTASTIC one simply called ‘White’). That said, after tasting many varieties back in the states, I’ve settled on Blue Moon as my beer of choice, though I’ll take a bad beer over a good cola any day.

I homebrew, and when the right combination of barley and hops and yeast is acheived, that is some mighty fine brew.

Have you ever tried a barley wine?
The good ones take 20+ years to mature into something really special
