Of all the candidates who have announced their intent to run for president in 2012, which would be the worst for the country?
So far, I think Obama is doing pretty badly, but his failures are in the “not fixing stuff” category instead of actively ruining things that weren’t already broken.
The Republicans have some nutty candidates who would certainly dismantle the government if they could, especially Ron Paul. The gold standard would set us back centuries in economic progress, but would an ultra-religious idealogue like bachman be even worse? I’m not too excited about the prospect of president jesus, but a little prayer in schools, some old fashioned queer beating, and a constitutional amendment to ensure we keep in god we trust printed on our money seems like a good deal compared to ron paul’s Final Solution to fire everyone in Washington. Anyone agree?
There’s all sorts of bad things to say about all the candidates, whether they’re just plain nuts or evil, but at least they seem to believe in things. Even if they’re things I find abhorrent.
Cain, though, appears to just spout random crap at random times. He’s either in it just for fun or he’s really got some mental problems going on. His…I can’t even call it “flip-flopping” about Muslims was particularly egregious.
Rick Perry. I think he could do more damage than anyone else. If he got a Republican Congress, say goodbye to Social Security, Medicare, civil rights, and abortion rights. The idea that Rick Perry could nominate judges to the Supreme Court should keep you awake at night.
I actually think Ron Paul’s extreme views on money could be healthy for the country. I don’t see him getting what he wants … you really think he’d get enough support from Congress to abolish the Federal Reserve and go back to the gold standard? However, his extreme views on money probably means he’d fight a lot harder than most presidents to make sure that we audit the heck out of the Federal Reserve Bank and closely examine where our money is going to. It’s also pretty safe to bet that he could not get enough support to withdraw troops from foreign countries to the extent he would want – but I bet he’d do a much better job of cutting down unnecessary military spending than any other presidential candidate. As far as Republican candidates go, I think he’s very promising.
My pick for the worst president would be Michele Bachmann or Rick Santorum. I say this because those candidates seem the most eager to piss people off. I can respect someone for having their beliefs and fighting for what they believe in. But the president of a country should serve their people, and those candidates seem like they’d be the least willing to compromise for the good of the country.
Like some others, she apparently believes that there is, oh, plenty of oil to be found right here in America, if we weren’t scared to go and drill for it.
Between Perry and Bachmann, I give a slight edge to Bachmann. Perry is just another god-bothering pro-business white guy with fat cat supporters. He’d basically be a nuttier Bush III. So…lower corporate taxes, crippled environmental regulations, Supreme Justices to the right of Genghis Khan, and a staggering deficit when he leaves office.
Bachmann – pretty much the same results, but worse because of her Tea Party connections and social agenda, coupled with the damage done to the US reputation that comes from electing someone so clearly at odds with reality. I think that would be the final straw that would result in a mass abandonment of the dollar as a unit of trade.
Is anyone willing to argue that Obama is the worst choice for 2012? He’s had quite a few fuckups, not the least of which being the fact that his presidency looks a whole lot like a Republican wet dream. During his presidency, the minority governing party Republicans keep getting whatever they want! He caved on literally every demand I’ve seen from Republicans so far, including the health care bill. Seriously, the thing does absolutely nothing to lower health care costs, while giving the health insurance industry even more wealth and power than it already has! He’s got a year to do SOMETHING worthwhile that Democrats can celebrate, that doesn’t look suspiciously like a Republican trojan horse, or he’d lose to Mickey Mouse.
There’s really not much to audit when it comes to the Fed. They make a profit off of the loans they make to banks, and that goes to the government. Your money’s not going anywhere, at least not anywhere in the federal reserve. If you want, the annual report is available here. It’s already verified by an independent auditor.
Annnnnd, because they make people think that the sort of nonsense quoted above could be true, Ron Paul or Rick Perry is the worst choice. It’s hard to pick which is dumber, though - and I live in Texas.
Mosier, part of the reason Obama is the best choice is because he doesn’t try to make the hard left sing his praises from morning to night. He’s never really presented himself as more than a moderate, in the first place. Second, the deals he’s gotten have been quite good, considering the political climate he’s operating in.
Well congress has to pass the laws still. Candidates like Bachmann and Cain don’t scare me all that much(still scary thoughts). Members of their own party are willing to admit they are a bit nuts, a Republican congressman or senator blocking whatever stupidity one of those clowns tries to pass would still be electable.
Standing in the way of someone like Perry however could end their political career(as a Republican) because he’s respected enough among Republicans that if he(as president) said someones got to go, it’d happen.
So I think Perry would be the most damaging overall.
Bachmann would be pretty damaging to our worldwide credibility though, I’ve spent enough of my life explaining to foreign friends not all of us voted for Bush. We elect Bachmann and I’ll just have to hide my head in the sand and admit my countries hopeless.
I’m not so worried about the laws that would be passed under a Bachmann administration-- Those would be much the same under most of the Republican candidates. I’m much more worried about what she might do as Commander in Chief of the armed forces.
Bachmann by a mile! Palin would (IMHO) be content to be celebrity-in-chief while others ran things (neo-cons). Bachmann would personally (with her husband’s permission) micro-manage the Christianization of the Federal government.
I know Palin is not an official candidate but if she somehow got elected, her witchy-hag voice might make me long for a Bachmann presidency.
