Which celebrities would surprise you if they turned out NOT to be assholes?

I came in here to say “Ashton Kutcher.” He comes across as asshole supreme.

Rest assured.

Wait, your belief is that Patton Oswalt is an asshole? Really? Now I have no experience with him, aside from hearing and watching interviews, but he seems very un-asshole-like.

I can attest that Patton Oswalt is unbearably pretentious and kind of a douche.

I’ve read his book. He makes no bones about the fact that he’s a total asshole. I think it’s a badge of honor for him.

My two cents: I’m not sure where I land on Lady Gaga. Half of me says that if I met her, she’d be a total diva; the other half says her act is all shtick and when they day is done, she’s just Stefani Germanotta again.

Gordon Ramsay, from what I’ve seen in interviews, is a swell guy in a from-the-other-side-of-the-tracks sort of way. Unless you’re in the kitchen with him; then he’s an asshole, but he’ll cut you a break if he can see that you’re giving 110%.

Did anyone say Russell Brand yet? If not, I will. He seems like the kind of guy who would be fun to be friends with for about a month, then you’d get really tired of his schtick.

That 50/50 split is pretty much exactly how she comes across in interviews. Sometimes she’s just a regular person who happens to wear a meat dress every once in a while. While other times she babbles on and on about how the world is a MUCH better place because she’s in it, doing whatever it is she does.

I saw one of those VH1 shows at children of rock stars, and I have to admit - his kids were two of the most normal and wall balanced ones in the whole show. I hate his music and loath his politics but he seems to be a pretty decent dad.

Oswalt is one of my favorite comedians, and I like his work. But he comes across as one of those deeply insecure people who hides it by being pretentious and condescending.

I would be surprised if Howard Stern was not a total asshole.

Janis Joplin? I just kind of felt like giving her a hug. She had a tough life.

Also, she doesn’t seem that into her “little monsters”. For someone who seems so grateful to be famous (watch her HBO special), she doesn’t seem like she’d ever hang out with her “little monsters” if there wasn’t a camera around. I don’t believe her whole I’m an outsider shtick.

Also, she seems phony as hell. In all the interviews I’ve seen, she has one accent. When she’s Gaga she has the Noo Yawk accent. Reminds me of when Madonna was ‘English’. :dubious:

She gets my vote for probably a bitch.

Yeah, when he started out in Baltimore, we moved in the same circles. He is still friends with a friend of mine and still just a pompous ass. My friend knows how I feel about him so he still feeds me pompous ass updates every once in a while.

The NY Post quotes a lot of unnamed former classmates, but she was apparently pretty popular in high school and college: Who’s that lady?

Color me unsurprised.

Lulu. Mainly because I saw her at a recording of the Graham Norton show years ago and fucke me, she was a diva. The staff setting up her repeated takes appeared to be seconds away from beating her to death with the mic stand. This didn’t surprise me much, as she’s always come across that way whenever I’ve seen her on vox pops.

I went to school with him and knew him a little; he was fine back then, a cool kid (even though I’ve heard that he says he was an outsider - he really wasn’t), but OK. He also did a documentary on confronting the far right that made me think he’s actually not a bad bloke at all, not just for the topic but for the way he approached it.

Simon from American Idol.

I have heard that his persona on the show is a fairly big affectation, and I’ve seen him be really nice to little kids who can sing well. But you don’t get where he’s gotten in life without being cutthroat and ruthless in your business dealings, at least.

But then there’s this: Lady Gaga Buys Fans Pizza at Autograph Signing

It was a mistake, she thought she was buying clothes.

A friend worked for her. Perfectionist, but gracious and kind.

Alex Trebek.
