Some time ago while having lunch at work the topic turned to conspiracy theories and peoples opinions on them, I find the subject kind of interesting but don’t really believe any (most?) of them are true.
Somehow despite the fact that I was arguing against them this discussion got mangled in the retelling and I’m now the ‘go to’ guy at work for conspiracy theories (not as fun as it sounds) because apparently people think I’m a believer in them. :dubious:
Anyway, if it was possible to find out for certainty the truth or otherwise behind any given conspiracy theory which one would you like to actually be true and which one do you really hope isn’t true.
Personally I’d like to think that there actually is something to the Roswell Case and humanity really has been visted by extraterrestials (assuming that the governments haven’t been hiding the truth for very good reasons!).
I’d also hate to find out that the moon landing really was faked (I don’t believe it was faked for a moment), I think that would really be a blow to the collective human spirit if that was the case.
btw this isn’t really about the merits or otherwise of each case, those have been debated indepth elsewhere.
Would it not be cool to uncover the conspiracy that would allow a 5000# Buick 225 to get 200 MPG on a carburetor? If it could get that mileage, maybe the emissions would be low or manageable because of the efficiency. Remove all the multiport fuel injection and related hardware. Cut the size of fuel tanks to five gallons.
On a similar thread elsewhere, someone said they’d heard that the reason for all the wars in the Gulf has nothing to do with oil, but an ancient artefact that was smashed into 4 [or 5] pieces millennia ago and the pieces scattered to the four corners of the world. Supposedly Hitler was looking for it, and allegedly all bar one piece has been found and are being stored at Area 51, the missing piece is believed to be somewhere in the middle east…
Quite what the artefact does is unknown, but it’s thought to be a Stargate like object.
I wish it were true that global warming is a hoax. I do not believe it to be true, but there’s no denying that humanity would be better off if it was a hoax as opposed to it being genuine.
That extraterrestrials have visited earth, and the government knows.
It would be cool to know there’s other sentient life.
And, while the aliens of conspiracy lore are pretty boring, at the very least we can rip off their interstellar travel method.
Not sure it’s really a conspiracy, per se, but I would love it if there really was an ancient race of humans far more technologically advanced than we are. I don’t know if I believe that they were influenced by aliens, but the idea of them merely existing is very tantalizing.
I kind of wish some of the conspiracy theories that have astronomers covering something up were true, too. If they were, astronomers would get a lot better funding than they do. I might even get paid off, since I have a master’s degree in astronomy.
OTOH, a lot of the conspiracy theories that have astronomers covering something up also say that whatever it is is going to cause the world to end fairly soon. That wouldn’t be cool.
The problem with that is, all those people went somewhere. Were my father’s second cousins Raptured, even though they were Jewish? Or have they been hiding out in an underground civilization for all this time?
They all went on a walkabout. The Outback (not the steakhouse one) is a big place. Those Jews could wander around for Mosses levels of time out there and not be seen
I wish the “there are folks that control power/wealth” were true. Maybe its the Jewish people. Maybe its the Illuminati. Maybe its Vampires. Who knows. But if it is true that means my lack of success and power is because I not part of the in crowd and not because (much more likely) that I just didnt earn it.
Include me with those who think that virtually all conspiracy theories are crackpot bullshit,
which do nothing but degrade the quality of intellectual discourse.
Conspiracy theories are not cute, they are not interesting, they are not funny, they suck,
I am glad they are not true, and there is no such thing as one I wish was true.
That RFK was not killed by Sirhan Sirhan, but by the bodyguard behind him.
Because then I think it would come out that he worked for Nixon, because, hey, a guy capable of doing everything else in Watergate in the 1972 election was probably capable of ordering a hit in the 1968 election.
