I was shocked to learn that The Woodlands, TX is a whole 160 feet ASL. I thought it was about 50. No wonder my nose bleeds all the time.
Hm. I’m only at 2986 feet, Thought I was higher than that, being so close to the Rockies.
157.9 meters above sea level? That surprises me. I live about two blocks from the Erie Canal and I hadn’t realized how high above sea level the canal was.
Hey Alpine. I thought you would be next in line.
You live near (or on) one of the most beautiful mountain ranges that I have ever seen. The San Juan range is something else. And I bet it can be a colossal pain in the ass sometimes, just like the Mosquito Range.
Skies are so blue at altitude, and the night is full of galaxies. I love it.
I think that we should ALL post some bing map pictures. The 3d option is pretty cool. Lets go folks. I’ll do something in the morning.
You still in GIS Alpine? I’m fighting ArcServer now.
Well, parts of it, anyway. Just remember, it has to get at least up to the height of Niagara Falls.
Yet the highest peak of Australia is in faraway Heard Island.
How do I find the elevation of my neighborhood? Is the information on google maps?
Doesn’t Omi no Kami currently live in the Indian Himalayas (IIRC Himachal Pradesh)? And I think AK84 lives somewhere in the Pakistan Himalayas. I forget where.
Me? - Copenhagen at an elevation of around 5m (for Copenhagen Airport - the closest figure I could find). Perhaps I am the doper that lives at the lowest elevation?
Omi no Kami needs to come in here. He’s doing some research in the Indian Himalaya’s. Himachal Pradesh state ranges from metres (1,148 ft) to 6,000 metres (19,685 ft) above the sea level. Although Dharamsala, where he’s spending much of his time is only around 7,000 feet.
If you know of a better website that deals with High Points by state and country please post a link to it/them. My reference has been americasroof.com but it has changed its appearance and scope since my last visit some time ago.
=============================================
I had a bit of trouble navigating at WorldAtlas.com but it purports to having elevations for a large number of cities and towns.
Be sure to read the red type that says
The upshot of that warning is that the address you want to bookmark or pass along is U.S. Board on Geographic Names | U.S. Geological Survey
If anybody can produce an actual elevation from that URL, for a spot close to home, please show me the steps to do such a thing. I gave up and went to Wikipedia for the city, but am pretty sure my neighborhood’s elevation is different from the one Wiki gives. It’s close enough for this thread, just not accurate enough for a purist – which I am not!

Yes, though I’m spending more and more time in IT development, like PHP/MySQL and learning my way around Linux. The GIS side is kind of stagnant right now, as we have no plans for self-hosting our mapping.

I knew I wouldn’t win but my town is another in the San Juan Range at 6523’. It snowed here on Thursday.
Which is:
a) uninhabited (so it’s unlikely that any Doper lives there)
and
b) not really considered by most Australians to be a part of the country, at least for the purposes of things like this. It’s a rock in the middle of nowhere, administered by the Department of the Environment and Water Resources.
Currently teetering on web connection. Sat dish can’t get a good signal. Weather/snow.
Bing maps is a good place for getting your elevation. Go to 3d, look in the lower right of the map for elev and lat and long.
There have been several geo-related threads. Who lives farthest North; who has traveled the greatest E/W or N/S extent; who lives farthest from their birthplace; that kind of thing.
I used to think of myself as well-traveled. Not anymore. Having lived on 2 continents and visited 3 more extensively places me well back in the pack of ordinary schlubs.
Well, I’m out of the running. I’m in SLC, UT and we’re only about 4300 feet or so above sea level, IIRC, at least down here in the valley.
Houston’s official elevation is 43 feet, so all the Houston Dopers are out of the running.
11 feet.
proof: Katrina
Priceless!
Indeed, my town is listed at 395 feet, but I’m replying to the thread from 36,007
Entirely too much time up here…
