Knowed Out, Raistlin was a major character in the Dragonlance series (both books and modules)- he was one of the original player characters (made for a player to fit right in to the story.) From what I remember, he was portrayed in the books as a self-interested power-hungry character. He was a little more than just a character somebody wrote a story about; he emerged as the major character in the books after a while.
