In the business world people “violate policy” every goddamn day without being fired. If you fired everyone who, in the heat of the moment, violated some policy, you’d be turning over your staff every couple of months. Every two weeks with your sales force.

A manager, a GOOD manager, will look at the extent of the violation, the potential consequences, the potential for recurrence, and the value of the worker, and decide on a course of action. That is exactly what happened here, and I have no doubt that if Tuba did something like this again, she’d be out on her ass.

Right, no problem, and we’re just currious as to what other Admins are equally valuable to the SDMB oranization such that they can surrvive any little hiccups like this.

I run a relatively trouble-free vBulletin site that gets about 300 to 500 posts a day, and even then it can be time-consuming. Aside from what Una said, there’s also:

• Cleaning up the messes the other moderators didn’t find; mainly deleting post padding messages, relocating posts placed in the wrong forum, hunting down hotlinks to leeched images, and renaming teaser thread title lines in on-topic areas.

• E-mail issues; mostly folks who don’t keep their profiles current, with a registered e-mail address that no longer exists. All sorts of things bounce back to you; thread subscription and private message notifications (if they have them turned on), e-mail messages generated automatically by vBulletin such as birthday greetings, and so on. People also change their e-mail address to non-working addresses, and then ask for help because they’re locked out of the site; the validation message was sent to an address that doesn’t exist. Users on my site are suspended for a day if messages sent to their registered e-mail address bounce back, because it’s a time-consuming chore to take care of it.

Don’t even get me started on people that register from or change their e-mail to Earthlink, who ALWAYS forget to whitelist the site.
