Dumbo, Robin Hood, The Sword in the Stone, and Winnie-the-Pooh. All seen on broadcast TV. Dumbo is the one I am most fond of.
Growing up, movies in general and Disney specifically were not a part of my childhood. When I was 8 I had a The Black Cauldron theater birthday party, but neither the movie nor the party were particularly memorable.
I’ve seen all of the recent CG Disney movies, but I’ve seen shockingly few of the the older, classic animated films. Aside from the above mentioned, I’ve seen just Alice in Wonderland and Fantasia, and neither even in one sitting.
The Black Cauldron had a troubled history. I recall reading about it being in production in 1977 in a New York Times Sunday Magazine article, but the film didn’t actually get released until 1985, at least five years after its planned date. There were a lot of changes and clashes over creative differences, and Lloyd Alexander, who wrote the original book, was very displeased with the result (as a lot of authors who sold to Disney have been).
I had high hopes for it based on what I originally saw, but the product was disappointing. Lord of the Rings it wasn’t. Nor was it Chronicles of Prydain.
Disney apparently wanted to forget about it, too. It’s had some half-hearted releases on home video. When we were at the Disney Parks we saw an attraction clearly based on the movie, but not labeled or identified as such. as far as I know, they never did a sequel, a spinoff, a video game, or comic based on it.
Adore Dumbo. I love love love the score. When I see an elephant fly, indeed.
I cry every single time. The animation of Dumbo himself, who never speaks, is so good.
Tarzan is a very underrated movie, it never got the hype of other ones (I suspect because it didn’t follow the traditional princess/royal family formula). My daughter has fallen in love with it, and I have to admit I dig it too.
Bummed Brave didn’t make the list, but I looked it up and was surprised to see it was Pixar. But that one is great.
I couldn’t vote for my top favorite, as it’s not on the list. There are several Disney Winnie the Pooh films. None of them are just called “Winnie the Pooh”.
Winnie the Pooh and the Hunny Tree is by far the gold standard by which the others are judged.
Hey, blatant racism and ethnic cultural appropriation are all part of the “Disney Magic.” Always has been, and by 2017 still nothing’s changed. Their biggest problem is running out of cultures and ethnicities to exploit.
I guess I have middlin’ Disney tastes as almost all of my choices fall within the 25 to 35 vote range. Except for Big Hero 6. I’m not surprised since it seems not a lot of people saw it. Also, I too would have picked Aladdin.
Besides missing Aladdin, the list also lacks the “package films,” Saludos Amigos, The Three Caballeros, Make Mine Music, Fun and Fancy Free, Melody Time, and The Adventurers of Ichabod and Mr. Toad.
As a Disney Animation aficionado, I checked off pretty much all the ones I don’t think are terrible (Aristocats, Fox & the Hound, etc) and ones I haven’t bothered to watch (Hoke on the Range, Brother Bear).
