I vote Game of Thrones, couldn’t wait for the series so went to get the books, all of them, it’s only 5 and though the books are still not the end they have me farther along than the season so far.
Personally I would recommend you skip it; it was awful. The last episode of the series proper may not have wrapped everything up, but it was an acceptable ending IMO.
I voted for Silders, Stargate SG-1, Dead Like Me, Supernatural, Eureka, Jericho, Sanctuary, Fringe, Dollhouse, Warehouse 13, Sherlock and Grimm.
Agreed
I saw many episodes of this on a UK channel, and would also recommend it - it’s one of those DVD boxed sets that I have on my wishlist
I’d also recommend Stargate Atlantis (is you’re going to watch SG-1) sadly it goes to hell towards the end of season 3 and seasons 4 and 5 ignore backstory, and generally play as though they were written by a group of fanboy teenagers. I recall another 'Gater saying that there was an episode where half the cast looked like they were going to throw up, or burst out crying. Oh and a lot of the behind-the-scenes staff left during the last two seasons as well.
True Blood starts of as really bad pornography, but allegedly gets better. Being Human is beloved by my best friend, I never saw it.
I’d add Misfits. Available in the US in Hulu; the first two seasons are the best superhero shows ever to appear on TV.
True Blood is good. The last two seasons or so have been downhill, but it’s still worth watching. If you give up on it coming into Season 5, you won’t be missing much other then some really nice sets and overly complex story lines, but like a soap opera, it’s not like sticking around is going to resolve anything without opening creating 10 more questions.
When I first started watching it I remember thinking"Gee, this show is like one giant orgy" and the one of the seasons (3 maybe) literally was one giant orgy. Yes, lots of sex, lots of nudity. No prudes allowed here.
That’s really the only show on the list I’ve seen.
I watched the first handful of episodes of Dead Like Me and never got into it, however, Pushing Daisies is amazing, but not on Netflix. This show fully deserves to be watched in some sort of HD format. Either 1080I/1080P/720P or Blu-Ray. In other words, if you’re going to stream it to your 4:3 TV or rent the regular DVD. Don’t bother. It’s a very visual show. I mean, you won’t lose the story, but you’ll gain so much if you can do it in HD.
What IS on Netflix is Twin Peaks. If you haven’t seen that, you need to. It’s short, easy to watch and one of the best shows ever put on prime time network TV.
Oh, and have you watched Six Feet Under yet? Not on Netflix, but it has been in the past so maybe it will be again in the future.
I wish I could give Archer all the checkboxes. One of the best on television.
Lexx is definitely weird but very different and pretty sexy. Archer is hilarious, very recommended for Simpsons/Family Guy/Futurama/Southpark fans. IT Crowd is also hilarious in the vein of Big Bang Theory and Community. Grimm is very good, beautifully shot and cast, interesting stories, monster-of-the-week along with an overall storyline.
I’ve tried Primeval and Torchwood but neither one grabbed me enough to stick with them, so far. But I didn’t dislike them.
One show I didn’t see mentioned that I am wanting more of is Survivors. It’s a post-deadly-virus UK drama where 99% of the population is wiped out and focuses on one diverse group that comes together. And of course a lot of the people they meet aren’t entirely honorable.
I want to absolutely concur with this. Loved the atmospherics and subtlely of evil in the first two seasons, but IMO no series has ever gone into the toilet faster that this one did with season 3. Part of that is they wrote themselves into a corner, but I think they were also trying to be more like a procedural in order to appeal to a more general audience.
If you absolutely cannot resist the temptation, “The Sound of Snow” is probably the best of a poor lot, and it actually ties in with the previous two seasons.
Agree - BIG VOTE for this
What DCnDC said. IMHO best to pretend it doesn’t exist. It doesn’t shit all over the series or anything, but I thought it was seriously wretched.
And I guess I should add that if you are a fan of Dead Like Me and/or Pushing Daisies, you should give the short-lived Wonderfalls a shot. Same creative team and they all share that quirky, somewhat dark sense of humor.
Bryan Fuller has an excellent record for creating quality TV that fails ;).
Writing these down!
Wasn’t there another short-lived show with dinosaurs that was canceled within the last year? Ensemble cast, led by an older man with a sea captain type beard?
When I first started watching Vampire Diaries I thought it was like you described, but it isn’t. It’s only superficially like Twilight. it’s got far better characters and a far superior vampire/werewolf backstory. It’s sexier and more gruesome even. It’s got some problems, but it is really nothing like Twilight, IMO.
OK, I voted for series that are very watchable. But then there are these that are worth a shot:
Lost Girl , Kings, Fringe, Heroes (for a while).
Sliders is great until they lost the Professor. After that- very meh.
I would add Wonderfalls & Pushing Daisies.
I liked the Dead Like Me special movie.
Really bad- stay away: The Tudors, Terra Nova .
Man, I’m out of the TV loop. I haven’t heard of most of these shows.
I watched a few episodes of season 1 and gave up, couldn’t follow what plot there was supposed to be for all the sex.
If I want to watch porn, I’ll watch porn, I was watching True Blood cos it was supposed to be about vampires integrating into normal every day society.
That would be Terra Nova, and it was either great, or shite, depending on who you ask. I thought it was shite.
I voted for a few I like, but I do think that many TV shows start strong and get tired after a while. Some of the shows I voted for I haven’t bothered to watch all of.
The one that I wanted to add is The Middleman. It was on ABC Family for only one season, but it is surprisingly awesome.
I would add Covert Affairs and White Collar. Both are fun shows to watch.
I’d say “watchable, reasonably entertaining, but not great”.
British series: Silent Witness
