Possibly because the original poster specified
“But for the purposes of this thread it has to be a crime, not like a disappearance, like Jimmy Hoffa. We would assume some crime was involved but no one can be 100%.”
I’m from Switzerland but living in the USA, and many people make the mistake of calling me Swedish instead of Swiss. That would explain it, no? But seriously, this is the head of state of a country murdered! This is big-time! I’m surprised that it isn’t discussed more.
Did you mean that you are the prison guard, or that a prison guard gave you this information?
The Wikipedia article I linked to in my post mentions another suspect, a Victor Gunnarsson. Do you know of any articles or books that give more detail on the murder and the investigation?
But that’s exactly what I was talking about when I said that I wanted to know if the Ramsey’s values and ideals somehow contributed to the murder. Being a murderous psycho isn’t a “value” or an “ideal.” The values and ideals would be more about the importance of a certain type of beauty, appearances in general, and what are appropriate activities for little girls.
Why did JonBenet in particular get assaulted and murdered like that? It could have had nothing to do with the whole beauty queen thing, but it’s obviously very likely that it did have something to do with that. And that applies whether the murderer was a Ramsey or not.
Discussion about JonBenet is discussion about American cultural values.
(My money’s on Burke, by the way. Should we start a new thread?)
Yes! I never really cared much about this case, but I sure have been interested in the discussion here. I will hold off on discussing my own theory (now that I’ve been given cause to form an opinion on this) …
ETA: Oops, I see it’s already happened.
Cicero:
I must have forgotten that after reading through the thread and seeing Hoffa himself mentioned by more than a few posters.
OK, sticking only with actual crimes, I’d have to say the murder of Sir Harry Oakes. The investigation was so obviously bungled, you have to wonder if it was mere incompetence or massive cover-up.
Not at all a truther, but Flight 93.
Flight 93 we have practically a blow-by-blow. Pick something harder.
As some of the poisoned Tylenol came from a store behind where my wife worked, I’m interested in that one. ESPECIALLY because her prime suspect is not the guy getting his DNA tested. Single people, did you know that marriage is a competition with an ultimate goal being a zero-sum game? You toss your partner a bone over the stupid stuff, like toilet seat up or down, so you can nail her on the identity of a serial killer.
Er, the rest of you also talk about serial killers with your SOs, right?
ETA: Yeah, Lewis is low-hanging fruit and a general loser who is unlikely to be guilty, but her suspect flew off to Central America with insufficient evidence for an extradition.
Not any more. He said while brushing the dirt from his hands.
Another vote for the Zodiac Killer. I grew up in San Francisco and the North Bay - the two places he committed his crimes. It used to freak the shit out of me that he could still be walking around.
Mine, though she has been out of Medicine for years, remarked the other day how nothing she saw on the job prevented her from enjoying her lunch. Actually, the 27-yr-old quote is, “I was in the OR today while a guy was in for intestinal surgery and all I could think was, ‘Will they have lasagna in the cafeteria?’” She may be a psychopath. Or a natural for surgery. It’s hard to tell the difference.:eek:
Dammit, I was coming here to post this one. (But I believe Richard was the culprit.)
Well, the thread title says “Which ONE crime…”
Here’s one that could be the basis of a good novel or movie, if there weren’t all bad guys and apparently no single hero.
The Blue Diamond Affair, read the chronology; sensational, scandalous, bizarre, surreal, depressing, etc, etc.
I like the bastard son, but Lizzie probably did it.
ETA: And Elizabeth Montgomery’s fine, FINE dimpled lower back in the made-for-TV movie were not evidence. Oh, you didn’t know Lizzie kept her clothes blood free by stripping beforehand?
Jon Benet.

The Torso Murderer, aka the Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run.
Not only that, but it was the second draft of the note - indentations on the note show that a rough draft of the note was written on top of it. The not-kidnapper from outside the home took the time to write the note twice. And although I think handwriting experts* aren’t as much scientists as they think, they say the handwriting on the first draft matched the mom’s handwriting.
*Yes, I am aware of the distinction between between people who match handwriting to handwriting, and those who claim to determine personality traits from handwriting. The latter is sheer quackery, but the former isn’t perfect anyway.
Oh, this one too, the death of pastor Doucé:
He had founded a center for sexual minorities (gay folks, transsexuals, SM, pedophiles), with support groups, and was murdered in 1990.
That American girl, mssing in Aruba=what was her name?
Are the Dutch police still keeping an eye on Joran Vander Sloot? (the main person of interest)
