Someone (not me :)) ought to count up which assumptions were violated the most. I agree with the person up thread who said there are lots of southern dopers.

There are quite a few for sure, but nowhere near a majority, I don’t think. If we were to go by state instead of region, which state would have the most, do you think?

Dig up the thread where we put our locations into a program on some site and it generated a Doper-Map. There were some interesting nodes on that one. Anybody remember that thread?

Got me 9 for 9, and I’m female.

My minority would be in the “Religion - Other” category you didn’t list. While a disporportionate number of Dopers are athiest, nearly all the rest are Christian or Jewish. There’s only a few of us admitted neopagans running around (I can think of about a dozen, and I pay attention to such things.)

Just Like WhyNot, [Waves Hello! ] I score a nine out of nine on this list, and following a non-traditional religion would be my minority… (although not the same non-big 6 religion that WhyNot follows)

However, if you use the “within 25 miles of a large city center” data point instead, I miss that one.

I think I’m in a minority on the Dope in these ways:

1. I am quite conservative in my politics and religion, although as someone said before me, hopefully not in a knee-jerk way.
2. I don’t use swear words, or at least I try very very hard not to. Maybe I’m just spending too much time in the Pit, though, and Dopers overall aren’t as foul-mouthed as I think.
3. I’m terrified of Great Debates. Sometimes I post anyway because I never have been able to keep my mouth shut, but I’m always afraid someone is going to pop up and call me an idiot in there. I’m even more afraid that they’ll be right.

I know there have been various polls over the years to permit or entice Dopers to reveal some details about themselves, and many of them have been well received if not outright popular topics. I know I have participated in some of them.

I could be very mistaken about the assumptions below, but based on my assessment of those past polls I’m concluding that the majority of SDMB participants (there’s no way to tell much about those who don’t post) fall into these demographics:

1. White
2. Heterosexual
3. Over 20 but under 40 years old
4. Live East of the Mississippi in the USA
5. Live North of Kentucky and Virginia in the USA
6. Have at least some college education
7. Speak English as a first (if not only) language
8. Own a pet
9. Don’t smoke

I already sort of answered, but I guess it would help if I said which catergories are me. hehe.

I am white, gay, over 20 under 40, I live west of the mississippi (SoCal),do have some college,speak english as my 1st language,do not own a pet and I do smoke.

Other minority things about me, Non-mainstream religion and I was home-schooled through high school.

I know there are only a few Indian Dopers. I’ve tried many times to get them out of the woodwork. Most of them are pretty quiet, it seems. Oh well.

I also am atheist Hindu, which I don’t know if there are any others on the boards…but I know others exist IRL.

Um…I don’t like cats too much. That’s gotta put me in a minority. I don’t hate them, I just can do without them and wouldn’t really notice if they disappeared from the Earth. Just sayin’.

That’s a reasonable statement. I have contributed to quite a few jazz-related threads, some of which have gone into the second or third page, and there may be as many as 50 Dopers (maybe even more) who admit to some interest in and knowledge of jazz.

It’s just that when “music” topics come up, unless they specifically mention jazz in the OP, most responses are in the non-jazz genres. I suspect there are more “Classical” fans than Jazz fans. And way more Rock and Pop fans.

As for living within 25 miles of a major urban area… define “major”? We’ve got Applebee’s and and BB&B and even a Super Target (I know bigger cities that don’t have them), and a mall with department stores (note the plural). We don’t have Williams-Sonoma or Banana Republic, though. We’re that size.

*I’m inclined to think the OP is right about (4), but only because of a greater population density in the eastern half of the country. It would be a natural result.

On the other hand, if the OP meant, “From States traditionally thought of as culturally belonging to the South”, then probably the statement holds.

I would imagine that political persuasion would be an important one that seems to be missing. I would consider myself in a minority there as well. I classify myself as a conservative (not that I don’t always equate this with right wing). I’m generally slightly right of centre, and I tend to vote that way here in Australiam and would be R if I were American, and Tory in the UK - but never blindly (I am thinking of voting Labor next time here).
