Which SDMB minority are you in?

   2a) Northeast 40% (includes the section mentioned above)
   2b) South 25% (east of the Mississippi)

That’s my impression overall too, (although Northeast might be a bit high still.) According to these numbers, though, a majority of the SDMB do not live in the North: rather, a majority of American SDMB’ers live in the North, which I would agree with. But if you’d asked:

that would still be a minority, since only ~40-45% of SDMB as a whole are Northern USA dopers [/hijack]

Okay. Let’s look at the flip-side of this quibble. Is there any other section of the USA where someone could say, “I live where the majority of USA Dopers live” and be convincing?

To follow your logic, it would be anyone outide the Northeast quadrant who lumps himself/herself in with all others who share that distinction. An equally strong case could be made for non-New Yorkers or non-Chicagoans.

There was a thread within the past couple of months that was trying to locate the center of a circle that would contain half the USA population. As I recall, the consensus was that it would have to include the Northeast USA. That’s a big part of why I tried to use that region for “the Majority” of Dopers.

I do see your point, however. And taking in the whole world as a population base, locating the 50% region (and thus establishing the majority criterion) would probably become merely trivial.

I don’t know that I’d add categories. But I find that there seem to be a lot of folks here in the “alternative lifestyle of some sort” category.

I know there have been various polls over the years to permit or entice Dopers to reveal some details about themselves, and many of them have been well received if not outright popular topics. I know I have participated in some of them.

I could be very mistaken about the assumptions below, but based on my assessment of those past polls I’m concluding that the majority of SDMB participants (there’s no way to tell much about those who don’t post) fall into these demographics:

2. Heterosexual
3. Over 20 but under 40 years old
4. Live East of the Mississippi in the USA
5. Live North of Kentucky and Virginia in the USA
6. Have at least some college education
7. Speak English as a first (if not only) language
8. Own a pet

Looks like I fit 4 of those. So I’m over 1/2 minority, yea me!

I fit on everything but age (over 40) and location (south of KY).

Someone (not me :)) ought to count up which assumptions were violated the most. I agree with the person up thread who said there are lots of southern dopers.
