The SDMB smilies are just atrocious. I like other smilies tho. Maybe it comes down to what you’re used to. But no. SDMB smilies suck and they have less dynamic range. and are the same, even though they mean something completely different. and :mad: are also too similar. The :dubious: is too much. The :rolleyes: is not enough (and his little smile is just so assholy!). 's glasses are too small. He’s not cool, he’s blind.
I really dislike smilies of all kinds.
People will write, “You’re an idiot dickwad…” and then put some stupid smiley next to it, as if that makes the statement “fun” and not an insult.
It reminds of back when stupid bimbos would sign their names and dot the “i’s” with a smiley face…it was stupid back then, and it is stupid today - and yes I mean you Candi, Bambi, Donni, Roni, Billi, Cindi and Chucki.
Emoticons are clever enough, I suppose - a semicolon and then a right paren.
But what is the deal with the display software converting those to little graphics elements and inserting them into the text? That strips away all the cleverness! It’s like writing a pun and putting all the possible meanings of the important words above them as superscripts. At this point you can have ^finger^ get converted to a “giving the finger” icon, and so forth, which has lost the last possible bit of cuteness or amusement.
Agreed. Similar to what Lobot said, it doesn’t matter what the intention of the preceding text was, our good buddy rolleyes turns it into the worst type of condescending crap. GD is thick with him, where he seems to take the place of an argument. I’m always seeing posts there which follow this pattern;
Grrr!! There also seems to be a growing trend where young girls will use two "i"s now instead of one. And let’s face it; in most cases that “i” should have been a “y” in the first freaking place.
So now it’s: Candii, Bambii, Donnii, Ronii, Billii, Cindii and Chuckii
I was really hoping the results would show :rolleyes: to be the most hated icon on the boards. Seeing it come in a poor second makes me :(.
As a rejoinder to an argument, it ranks right up there with “OH NOES!!!1!,” or the real world equivalent of repeating someone else’s words in a high-pitched whine.
I feel the same why about :dubious: when it’s used in a serious argument, but sometimes it’s used humorously, as kind of a gentle “do you realize what you just said”? It’s also useful in Star Trek threads.
All the people saying that :embarrassed doesn’t look embarrassed - come on, its little cheeks are red with shame! The fact that it also doubles as :blowjob makes it even more endearing.
ETA: Apparently I don’t know :embarrassed is not the correct code for the embarrassment smiley. :o
The embarrassed smiley, aka the “blowjob” smiley, looks stupid, is rarely used, and seems pointless. Close second goes to the “winking” smiley which to me comes across as even more smug and condescending than :rolleyes: or :dubious: .
I would have voted for the putz smiley but it’s long gone.
In pure aesthetic terms, :dubious: is the ugliest. But I’m also on the anti-:o bandwagon, because it doesn’t look anything like “embarrassed” to me.
That being said, I’m a generally pro-smiley person. Emoticons take place of actual body language and tone of voice. In person, you can be kidding around with your friend and tell her she’s a horrible person for doing ____. Your friend can tell from the way you’re talking that it’s a joke. On the internet? The other person has no idea whether you’re kidding around or flaming them. Yes, sometimes it’s obvious from the context, but there’s always that one person who doesn’t get it. A or or says loud and clear that you’re having fun, no harm intended.
(Of course, sometimes you’ll have a jerk who thinks he can get away with everything by ;)ing, or someone can’t tell if you’re laughing at them or with them. But in general, smilies help ward off misunderstandings).
Also, there are times when a picture really is worth a thousand words. You can write five paragraphs on how you did something so bone-headedly stupid, and you can’t think what came over you, and you want to dig a hole to China and crawl in… or you could pack all that into one :smack:. Sometimes, of course, it’s appropriate to write the five paragraphs, but if you’re just making a quick response to something, I’d say go for the :smack:.
