It was also marketed more and had the added benefit of having a title that is familiar to a great many people.
I don’t think “Through the Looking Glass” has as much resonance as a book as the original Alice did (it certainly didn’t with me, I HATED TTLG). Not to mention they didn’t make a world-famous Disney movie out it.
Marvel Comics movies seem to make ridiculous amounts of money so I voted for the Captain America one. I’ve no plans to see it and lost interest in them a long time ago but one cannot deny that they rake in the bucks. However,

Civil War in a walk. None of the others will get within 15% of its gross.

Uh… are you literally saying no other movie will make even 15% what “Civil War” will make?
I think Disney/Marvel may be overdoing it with the comic book movies and expect the interest in them to wane soon. At the same time, DC doesn’t seem to have learned that their movies need to be less dark; Batman v Superman looks too serious and dark, while the Marvel films seem lighter and more fun.
I chose Finding Civil War originally, then I switched to Finding Dory.
I’m personally experiencing “superhero movie” fatigue, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. It’s even worse now that superhero movies have decided to go a lot darker than in the past. Geez I go to movies to be entertained not to feel depressed!
One day later, it just passed CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER by passing $720m; I’m still expecting bigger things from CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, but danged if DC’s superhero throwdown isn’t a force to be reckoned with.
I’ve said before you can’t just judge the success of a movie by how much it makes; you have to consider how much it cost to be made as well. A $50,000,000 movie that makes $200,000,000 is a bigger success than a $300,000,000 movie that makes $250,000,000.
So here are some of 2016’s movies with their domestic ticket sales divided by their production budget:
Deadpool - 6.19
Miracles from Heaven - 4.15
The Boy - 3.58
The Forest - 2.66
Ride Along 2 - 2.27
Risen - 1.85
Hail, Caesar! - 1.36
How to Be Single - 1.24
Batman v Superman - 1.19
13 Hours - 1.06
London Has Fallen - 1.01
The 5th Wave - 0.91
Eddie the Eagle - 0.68
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot - 0.65
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies - 0.39
Gods of Egypt - 0.22
Why domestic ticket sales? Sure, domestically The 5th Wave has only pulled in $34 million on a $38 million budget – but worldwide, it’s pulled in $107 million so far. (And it doesn’t come out in Japan until later this month – but that’s not going to matter to your metric; it could flop there, or be the biggest hit ever, and no difference would be made.)
Okay. Here’s the same list of movies, using international ticket sales rather than just domestic. (I left out the two movies which apparently have not had international releases.)
Deadpool - 13.05
Miracles from Heaven - 4.56
The Forest - 3.76
Batman v Superman - 3.14
Ride Along 2 - 3.06
The 5th Wave - 2.82
Hail, Caesar! - 2.79
How to Be Single - 2.58
Risen - 2.23
London Has Fallen - 2.14
13 Hours - 1.36
Eddie the Eagle - 0.98
Gods of Egypt - 0.98
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies - 0.59
I’m curious why people think that Suicide Squad is primed to do better than either of the recent Superman movies, as well as every other R rated movie ever released in history.
