So I’m leaving my job, where I have three years’ worth of graphic design projects sitting on a couple harddrives. Plus all my iTunes. Plus a bunch of ripped DVDs. To take them with me I’m gonna buy a terbyte drive.
I need–like everyone else; I think this is as close as you can ever get to a universal human need–the best one for the price.
I like Seagate, have had very few problems with them. Last I checked, their warranty was longer, at least when compared to Western Digital. Haven’t heard much good about Iomega drives.
Drive failure is significantly correlated with model, manufacturer and vintage. Google did a study recently concerning this issue, and though it didn’t name the drive manufacturers in the report, it’s since been revealed that they use Hitachi Deskstar for at least some of their servers, presumably due to cost/benefit. Coincidentally I purchased a Deskstar before this release, following my anecdotally very high failure rate with Maxtor, who I now regard with complete derision.
The new Samsung Story drive has been getting great reviews on Newegg. It is also cheap at $90 for 1TB with free shipping.
I personally have had bad luck with LaCie drives and good luck with Western Digital and Seagate enclosures. Recently, however, Seagate has had a rash of firmware issues causing problems with their larger drives that make them not a safe bet. The latest drive models seems to have it resolved, but you never know what will be inside a USB enclosure.
I’ve heard good things about the Western Digital Caviar Black. A 1TB 7200RPM SATA drive for $95 on Newegg with a 32MB Cache for fast access to your data. It’s what I plan to use when I build my own desktop.
