Left, with the hook of the hanger facing in. I also work in a resale shop, and all of our clothes face left, with the tag on the left sleeve or left-hand side of the waistband, so that it’s in easy reach of the customer. (Well, unless it’s a delicate fabric, in which case the tag goes on the inside label.) It seems like most clothing faces left in the stores, but I could be remembering wrong. Anyone else have this impression?
Me, too. Mine also face left, and I make sure they do that. It’s an OCD thing.
I changed a lot of things in my life when I moved to the South, including which way I hang clothes in the closet. After 40 years of left facing clothes, everything faces right for this right-handed household. I hadn’t even given it a thought until I read this thread. Hmmm…
Ah, for once a thread on an important subject. My clothes closet runs front to back, with the clothing rod on the right. On the rod, everything faces to the right, i.e. towards the closet door. This is the only acceptable option, as I find myself unaccountably disturbed if my clothes are all facing away as I enter the closet, as if they were snubbing me.
Also, I prefer the hanger hook facing in, but my local laundry, like most others, apparently, puts my shirts on the hangers so that they would face left if hung in my closet with the hook in. I must therefore hang them with the hook facing out to maintain my mental health, as I would find it traumatic in the extreme if my shirts were facing left (toward the back of the closet) when everything else faces right. Except that I find the ‘hook out’ position to be vaguely disturbing as well.
On reading what I’ve just written, I think I know why I’ve been sleeping so poorly lately: that goddam closet, right there in my bedroom, with the clothes inside talking amongst themselves and no doubt mocking me. If any of the resident SDMB attorneys happens to be reading, could I interest you in a lawsuit against my luandry for mental anguish?
