I’m not even near my mid-20’s! I thought graying hair happened to old dudes, in their 30’s?
BTW, it’s not even gray, it’s freaking white. Isn’t there supposed to be a transition? Is my hair next? Will people be calling me “sir” in 2 years? And how did this happen so fast? It seemed to sneak up on me until my girlfriend said something about it…
Pssst, Anderson Cooper went “grey” early. (Hubba hubba!) I got my first silver hair at 13. I plucked the ones I found for years, but don’t really bother now.
I’ve had the same dozen silver hairs for the last 12 or 13 years. I like the way they look. I keep expecting to get more, but I never do, and I wish I would.
Cheer up. It just means you’ll get to look distinguished longer than your peers.
Been turning gray for as long as I can remember. I was in my early twenties and some girl at a club accused me of trying to look trendy by putting a streak in my hair (it was just my natural gray.)
My hair turned completely white at age 38. Of course, my Mom’s hair was white by age 35, so I blame her genes. Strangely, I now have a patch of hair on the top of my head that’s turning black. I have a weird set of hair.
I started going silver at around 25; I colored it up until January of 2007, when I stopped (I’m 46). It’s now (with the exception of some final brassy blonde strands) a beautiful shade of platinum. Gorgeous, and my hair feels and looks much healthier.
My son was complaining about his early gray–I told him he had two hair options from me. First, male pattern baldness, or second, early gray. Which did he prefer? He agreed early gray was better.
I talked to my (white-haired) grandfather today, and he said that his hair started turning white (not gray) when he was in the Navy, he reckoned when he was about 20. He said that he was almost completely white by 30 or so!
I have to admit, I do prefer early gray to balding. No one in my family is bald, so maybe I lucked out there.
My grandfather did say that his hair color improved his chances in the business game, as people treated him better when they thought he was older. He was quite successful, too.
My biological father had hair loss, and my younger son has hair loss (although he prefers to blame the acne medication he took as a teen ager–whichever reason, he’s losing it). So yeah, my older son has a perfect first hand example of the other alternative.
As for me, I started coloring my hair at 21, and stopped over a year ago at 46. I’m amazed at how pretty the silver is, and I really don’t know why I ever thought it was shameful.
I saw my first gray hair at about 32. My thought at the time - Well, it’s been a pretty good run.
Today, about 6 weeks shy of 40, my chin (if I don’t shave for a few days) is looking kind of white. But you still have to look pretty hard to see the gray creeping in along the sides of my head.
I don’t mind the look of it and I kind of look forward to seeing what happens to the colour as I age.
I’m making a note to thank my parents for giving me a set of genes that has left me a full head of hair. Mostly.
