I mean, it’s RIGHT THERE: “You don’t understand statistics, you don’t understand college admissions, you don’t know how to put together a consistent argument, and you’re full of shit…”
Oh yeah, the Rice admissions guy. I forgot who that was. What a dumbass. Not shocking that a committed dumbass does not change his stripes after a decade.
FWIW, I do alumni volunteer interviews for the Rice Admissions office and one aspect of his story is now sort of true (though wasn’t back in the 80s).
There is now a program in place that students from across the country can apply to. They come onto campus for a long weekend in October (though not this year due to COVID) and they can have their admissions interview early if they choose - even before submitting an application. Though, these students aren’t chosen for having the highest test scores. They are generally high performers but there aren’t score cutoffs. The only actual cutoff is that their family income is not high, so the University foots the bill to have them travel to Houston since this would not otherwise be an option for them. Note this program did not exist 10 years ago, much less back in the 80s.
I won’t be doing live interviews this year for obvious reasons, which is a shame, but still keep involved. And having the chance to talk with prospective students reminds me that the kids are generally alright and gives me some hope for the future.
But I originally came into this thread because of the handshake thing. I’ll also add onto the pile of people who have never seen any particular bigotry against Roma or Travelers. Not that I deny any exist - just that if it does, it’s much, much less common than bigotry towards just about any other group you could name.
Sure, but it wouldn’t be ethnic prejudice then.
Like if other economists did not find issues with that. One important bit to notice is that by looking at Houston, Frier actually looked at one place where Police reforms had taken place. Talk about looking for a thing of value under the place that had a light working. Incidentally you are now denying that I linked to other studies that are more recent than Fryer.

And torture doesn’t work still…
I think we are. The ‘everybody’ is overly optimistic.
Being ignored by someone who adds 2 and 2 and gets !racism! is no great loss. I had thought we were all adults here and understood the difference between correlation and causation, but evidently not.
Are all her friends from her same culture? If so that wouldn’t really prove anything.
Also, uh, I hope the argument doesn’t put you off, but if you posted here before then you’re probably used to it.
That just confirms @Riemann’s point that it’s the lifestyle people object to, rather than the race.
If they’re not being prejudiced against in the USA, how is their lifestyle being objected to?
And like I said, others who do have the same lifestyle in the same locations in Europe aren’t treated to the same prejudices. Other prejudices, but not the same.
So yes, there is a prejudice against itinerants, but anti-Roma+Irish Traveller prejudice isn’t just that.
I missed that. Who has the same lifestyle?
What?
I’d say there is some prejudice against them, too, but they’re not encountered very often (or maybe people don’t realise they’re a different group).
Depends where you are and what you’re doing, I reckon. I certainly met them in my various sojourns in the UK over the years. Where are you located?
East Midlands, and I grew up in Suffolk. The only time I see hippy types is when I visit Glastonbury (the village, not the festival). I always assumed they were a dying breed.
Saw plenty in Wales, and in London. Admittedly, it’s been a decade since I’ve been in the UK proper.
I try and avoid the capital, unless I’m visiting my sister. Can’t stand being surrounded by so many people. But where do they live in London? I thought the authorities were pretty hot on evicting squatters these days, and the rents are completely insane.
There are still plenty of squats, they just have moved to old warehouses and factories rather than flats, since the laws changed a while back. Plenty of those in the current economy. My understanding is that the NATs tend to park at “traditional” squatter buildings in some sort of symbiosis. I can’t be sure, because I mostly saw them out and about, as it were, or met them at music things.
I’m slightly surprised all the old factories haven’t been turned into executive flats already. Probably too much red tape.
Were you working in London?
Naah, just visiting, several different times in the period from '99 to 2009. Nothing longer than a month.
Pretty cool you were able to get so much time off. And you must have liked it if you came back again.
Have you been to a lot of other places?
I can’t help but feel like we’re losing the spirit of BBQ here…
But I was mostly freelancing at the time, so could set my own calendar.
And not that many - been to other places in Europe, Africa, Saudi Arabia and the USA.
