This could have been a good rant and a good flame-fest, except for this whole racial sidetrack that now has been brought into it.
Let’s focus on the key points here:
You obviously haven’t heard of the rather charming practice that male cats of **ALL ** varieties, from lions& tigers right on down to housecats have as regards kittens. If male cats come across kittens that they have not fathered, they WILL KILL THEM.
And no, this isn’t an unusual or occasional practice, it happens all the fucking time.
You never see male dogs pulling that sort of shit.
I have personally been acquainted with several situations involving both adult dogs and adult bitches killing newborn pups.
Because I find it wholly repugnant that some people feel that even thoughts of torture (be the subject of torture human, or any other animal) are acceptable? They simply are not. All actions begin with an idea. And airdisc has already rationlalized the actions that follow from his beliefs. He’s at a point where he may even condone those actions in others. From there it’s small steps to comitting the act oneself. How is this not morally repugnant?
So. Nitpicking? No. Calling him a hypocrite? Yes, definitely.
The answer is very simple: kill him. I say this without anger and malice. It just seems we should impose some artificial selection to breed his kind out.
We can give him a quick, humane death. The point is not to “punish” him, but to remove his unfortunate kind from the planet.
Of course, if the cause of his “evilness” or whatever isn’t genetic, then my whole argument collapses.
Wow, what a bunch of baloney. Oh my god, a kitten has been tortured to death! Yes, that person deserves DEATH, no less. He should have had a normal barbecue, where stuff like chicken is barbecued, since chickens have a wonderful life over at the chicken factory, and are perfectly happy to be killed.

I merely wish to clarify why everyone is so pissed about this and not about, as Avumede suggested, chickens being slaughtered and grilled.
It is because killing and eating other animals is part of nature. The chicken eats the plants, the large animal eats the chicken. Large animals(including humans) have to eat other animals to survive.
However, killing (or torturing) an animal then stuffing it and placing it on your wall instead of eating it for your survival should piss everyone off. Especially grilling a newborn cat who cannot defend itself while taunting it. So don’t you talk about how terrible it is to kill a chicken compared to grilling a kitten alive, don’t you dare.

Good points. While barbecuing a live kitten is not quite the same thing as barbecuing a dead chicken, you must admit that the way we raise chickens and such to be slaughtered has nothing to do with nature. It is our own manufactured cruelty, perhaps a necessary one, but a cruelty none the less. Whether the kitten was alive or not seems beside the point. Would barbecuing a dead kitten fail to raise anyone’s eyebrows?
Your comments about the newborn cat not defending itself only emphasizes my point. No animal raised for consumption can defend themselves. THe cow doesn’t get to square off against the butcher before she is killed. So, again, this point in particular is equivalent.
Probably, if the SDMB went to a slaughterhouse, we would be incredibly disgusted. Killing things just is not nice. But for right now, we don’t go to one, we don’t think about it, and it’s routine. This incident is neither routine nor hidden, so that’s why it gets such a strong reaction.
So, other than looking like a total jerk, what’s your fucking point?

NO! The fact that the kitten was alive is the whole and entire point. Can’t you see that?
While slaughter of farm animals for food consumption is not something most would do for fun and entertainment, such things are done in as humane a manner as possible. Torture, such as the kitten was subjected to, is an entirely different and very sick thing to do.
If you can’t distinguish between the two circumstances, I feel sorry for you.
I dunno, but plenty of people boil live lobsters.
I have to admit I had the same visceral reaction to this story. I thought the judge who heard the case should sentence Charles Benoit to be roasted alive, as soon as possible. Then he should give Benoit’s lawyer just enough time to get to the federal courthouse and back with a stay, and Benoit could be pulled out of the pit with his face a little redder and his pants a little browner. Of course, that would only demonstrate that the powerful can do hideous things to the weak, which is what Mr Benoit was doing.
My point is that extreme frothing over this is, well, extreme. Yes, the kitten barbecue-er is a real jerk, and yeah, I’d like to punch him in the gut. But people saying he should die? Or be tortured himself?
Get a grip, people. Put this in perspective.
Yeah! I’m sure the 18 months in county jail, with 8 months off fer good behaviour, and a couple of hours of community service will be more than enough to teach this asshat that his action were wrong.
Should he be tortured? No.
He should also never be hired to do any job, never be eligable for public assistance, never be seated at a diner, never be sold goods at a store, and never be spoken to. He should have to go live in the woods, wearing only his county-issue jail jumpsuit and have to survive on his instincts.

I just want to jump in and say that the boiling of live lobsters is terrible. Although there are legitimate defenses (“It’s not done with sadistic intent”, “the lobster is eaten, not wasted”), I really think it ought to be killed humanely before boiling.
Why should we be horrified at the live roasting of a kitten, when we do the same to a lobster? Could this be because kittens are cute, and lobsters are hideous? That would make an interesting Great Debate.

Anyone who tortures a kitten in such a way is ‘trash’ and if his skin was white then that justifies the ‘white’ part. so regardless of where he lived/what he drove/what firearms he owns/what type of house he lives in he is white trash.
