Who are the oldest members of this board?

I am a member of the tow truck industry. Manny peoples ask and now I wonder. (sic)

Why did I not pick up the lack of a space between ’ continuos member’ in my above post as I did a preview and everything?

I am a 99er.
As for my age…I am a Proud Veteran of the War Of Jenkin’s Ear. We’ll beat them Spanish Devils yet! ARRRR!

Going by their join date on this board is misleading. I am (obviously) a “99er,” but I joined in March when we left the AOL forum, not December as my profile shows. I just changed my screenname from LauraRae to Ruffian in December of 1999.

I started posting to the SDMB in fall of 1997, but I’m still far from the “oldest” poster around here. OpalCat and the admins were there long before I was.

I thought unca Cecil was the oldest - isn’t he member number 1, or something like that?

Who awoke under the stars on the AOL beach?

There is no member #1, Lynn Bodini is #2, Cecil Adams comes in at #31. Though as others mentioned, that only counts from 99 when the boards moved from AOL.

I wonder.

He’s the fucking hall monitor.

Banhattan?

So . . . who was member #1? Can’t we just ask Lynn, who was the only other member when you joined?

I wonder, when the Board only had two members, if they pitted each other.

THERE IS NO #1!!!

Forget all you have ever heard of #1!

Nothing to see here…nothing to see…go home…go home and forget…forget…forget

Before Manhattan, way back on the AOL board, we had a precursor to the sort of kid who starts thousands of pointless GQ question threads–but this guy was on drugs. He used to begin every freaking thread with the phrase
"Manny peoples wonder and now I ask. . . "
followed by his lame (and often insulting, frequently racist) question. He actually did not last very long, but the damage was done and he became, in the minds of the AOL crowd, “Manny Peeples.”

There are still a number of AOL types hobbling around with our walkers. Some post less frequently than they did, but they show up from time to time. In addition to the couple of us who have confessed to it in this thread:

AHunter3
andros
C K Dexter Haven
Dougbowe
DrFidelius
Eutychus
Jess
Lynn Bodoni
MEBuckner
Monty
OpalCat
RJKUgly
Several more whom I recognize from time to time, but don’t always associate with changed usernames.

Some of the member number/join date oddness comes from the time when we switched over from UBB to vBulletin software for this board. The conversion tool which came with vB did transfer over all of the threads and members from UBB, but it did not necessarily give every member the same number as before. And it almost certainly didn’t give every thread the same number, since in UBB, each forum had its own set of numbers, while in vB, the whole board uses a single numbering scheme. So (back in the days before the old-post-pruning), you could bring up thread #1, but that might or might not have been the actual first SDMB thread.

And I think I’ve seen a statement by jdavis or some other such VIP that User #1 was a test account, to make sure the software was working correctly.

Member 207 here.

OP of thread #8 (no longer accessable, hopefully available when the archives go on line.

And I go back to the AOL days as well.

Wasn’t it “Manny peoples ask and now I wonder…?”

Of course, there’s a #1. But he’s really #6.

Yeah. Your version sounds more likely.

For your edification, some samples of the posting style of “Manny Peoples”, aka ZPhobiaZ, aka ZSPhobiaSZ. The parts that include lower-case were quotes he’s replying to, his own stuff was always in ALL CAPS. (Only one of these contains a variant of his trademark “MANNY PEOPLE ASK ME” phrase, sorry to say):

Does “God” exist? Is “God” truly the “Higher Power” that created the earth and the universe? Did “God” create man? Or did man create “God”? Is “God” something that mankind created because mankind needs something to believe in and needs something to give people a reason to live? I am curious to know what “The Teeming Millions” think.:
IT IS NOT POSSIBLE FOR T MAN BE CREATOR OF GOS CAUSE IN THE BIBLE IT TALKS ABOUT HOW IN THE BEGINING THEREWAS GOD. THIS MEANS THAT GOD WAS THERE BEFORE MAN. I HOPW THIS HAS HELPED YOU, IF YOU EVER NEED TO KNOW ANYTHING FEEL FREE TO ASK ME, AS THERE ARE MANNY PEOPLE WHO DO.

Facts and Opinions are Welcome

Freedom of the press is guaranteed only to those who own one.

Quoted by Richard Kluger The Paper: The Life and Death of the New York Herald Tribune Knopf 86:
I THINK RICHARD KLUGER WAS RIGHT,YOU ONLY GFET FREE SEECH IN THIS COUNTRY IF YOU OWN A NEWSPAPER.IT’S LIKE WITH GUNS YOU CAN ONLY KNOW YOU’LL BE FREE IF YOU HAVE ONE,MAYBE THATS WHY THOSE FOLK IN WASINGTON DETROIT ARE TRYING TO TAKE THEM AWAY

I do not, unfortunately, have any samples of posts from the original “He Who Shall Not Be Named”. It’s been way long enough since that era, I don’t think that invoking his name will prompt his reappearance. His name was ~PerkyDan~ or some close variation on that.

I didn’t really see his posts, he was mostly before my time. In fact, I know when “my time” began (first post August of '97), and several posters who are still active were already well-established at that time: TubaDiva, OpalCat, Lynn Bodoni, C K Dexter Haven (using an abbreviated version of his screen name), …also some others who changed screen names at some point over the years.

David Simmons - mathematically, I believe - has to be in his 80s.
