Gosh, I don’t feel so odd anymore. I can pick up, throw (with reasonable accuracy and speed) and lift decent weights. I’m working on kicking high enough to turn off light switches, but seeing as how I have other problems, it may take a bit.
I can pick up most anything with my toes, and do all the time. I can also pinch like hell - people run in fear, although I keep my toenails very short. I use my feet on elevator buttons fairly often. There’s probably more things I do, but I don’t really think about it unless I have shoes in the way and can’t use my toes.
I once lit a paper match with my toes (including taking it out of the matchbook) and lit a cigarette with it, but it wasn’t very practical - more for the challenge than anything. I’ve never spent much effort in practicing using my toes more, though.
I have VERY short, stubby toes (was called “Sausage-Toes” for a brief time in school after some kids saw me barefoot), but it doesn’t seem to be a terrible handicap. My whole (blood) family does this - except my dad, who thought we were all weird. My mom’s got long toes, so maybe she started us kids down the path. But I’ve always used mine more than she does hers.
I knew a guy once who could play darts with his toes. It was pretty cool. He was a martial-arts guy, though - he could also kick a 10-foot ceiling from a flat-footed stance.
I can pick stuff up with either foot, sometimes even with socks on. I find this useful mainly in two instances: 1. I’ve thrown something at the garbage can from a distance of 15 feet, missing badly, and I need to pick it up. But why bend over when you can just do the grab and toss with your foot? 2. After I take my socks off at night (again, no hands involved), I pick them up and toss them in the clothes basket with my feet.
I give new meaning to the word lazy.
I knew I could pick up things with my toes, but I wasn’t sure how heavy the item could be. So, I just went to my fridge, and picked up a gallon of milk with my foot. Many times, if I drop a towel, or pencil, or small object, I’ll grab it with my right foot, and bring it up to my hands.
Strangely, I’m much better at this with my right foot, than with my left.
I picked something up with my toes in front of a friend once- she got her husband from the next room to watch and made me do it again. Like that wasn’t weird enough, she then grabbed a pile of laundry and threw it on the floor in front of me- “do it again, do it again”
Untill that moment I thought everyone picked stuff up with their toes- only the lazy bend over.
