Who do you despise on YOUR side of the political spectrum?

Oh, hell yes, all the time. It’s nothing new with Maher; the writer Mark Evanier mentioned once on his blog having seen Maher at The Comedy Store in the late 80s tell an audience to go fuck themselves and storming off when he told a joke that didn’t get a laugh.

Well, I looked at the article and saw no names - skimmed it three times and saw…nada. Are the names in the Ukrainian or Russian translations? Perhaps my skimming technique is faulty.

How about supplying the requested list?

Thanks, Dan

Heh, him doing that and chortling before he delivers the punch line.

If all he did was that, I might be able to forgive him. I’ve laughed at plenty of hack comics. It just seems that even when I do agree with him, he’s arrived at the conclusion through several fallacies. On top of that, his humor seems more interested in “owning the pubbies” rather than actually being funny.

I despised Trump from the absolute beginning and stated so on these boards multiple times.

Don’t feel bad, so did they.

Sadly, the list of leftist UK politicians I don’t loathe to some degree is pretty small. The entire Labour party has just been a completely useless shitshow in Opposition, the LibDems should have used the nuclear option during the coalition years but instead gave up everything they stood for, and the Greens are pointless. I mean, they’re not nearly as bad as the Conservatives and their fellow right-wing travellers but that’s a very, very low bar to clear.

In the US I am wondering what tf is going on with Eric Adams in NYC. Initial reports of nepotism (immediately hiring his brother) and draconian police initiatives are not encouraging.

And I forgot George Galloway! Though he’s such a raging performative ego, I’m not sure if he counts as being on my side, or any side other than the Galloway fan club.

I try very hard not to think about Galloway. Like Piers Morgan, he’s theoretically left-wing but is really a member of the Flaming Edgelord Party.

That’s pretty dishonest. The statement you linked hasn’t aged well and does evince some swallowing of Putinist propaganda, but it was written before the invasion.

This is the DSA’s actual position on the invasion:

This extreme and asymmetrical escalation is an illegal act under the United Nations Charter and severely threatens the livelihoods and well-being of working-class peoples in Ukraine, Russia, and across the region. We urge an immediate ceasefire and the total withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukraine.

It’s a statement from the Democratic Socialists of America, a prominent left-wing group. It was written by a committee and doesn’t have their names attached; almost certainly it didn’t include anyone we’ve ever heard of. Still, the DSA is a major organization of the American Left, so if Shalmanese hadn’t grossly distorted their position, it would have been fair to describe that position as one held by “a whole bunch of leftists”.

I reject the notion that the DSA is a “major” organization of the American Left. When I think of leftists, I think of the Occupy movement, Michael Moore, and the like. When they focus on being apologists for Mother Russia, they cease to be mainstream.

Who do I despise? Bernie Sanders. He’s too good to call himself a Democrat, but every four years he crawls out of the woodwork to run as a D for president. Had he got the nomination in 2020, we’d have four more years of the orange psycho Soviet stooge. Had he won, he’d have got nothing done. I can get behind his proposals, but most of the country can’t. You’ve got to take little bites, and I don’t think he’s capable of it.

Also, Sanders is such a fucking self involved douche that he A) runs again in 2020, splitting the progressive vote instead of throwing his support behind one of the more electable candidates; B) takes support from Joe Rogan; and C) can’t be bothered to dress respectfully during the swearing in of the first woman and person of color as vice-president and instead makes the day all about him and his stupid mittens. fuck Sanders and his sexist/racist movement.

Christ, you’re a fucking douchebag. You realize you’re literally sinking to the “Obama wore a tan suit!” level here?

Also, Sanders, endorsed by such sexists and racists as AOC and Rashida Tlaib, was by far the most popular of the progressive candidates. Warren is the one who selfishly came in and split the progressive vote.

Your reading comprehension sucks. I just established that DSA (whose current membership includes a great many former Occupy activists), aren’t apologists for Mother Russia.

There’s no contradiction between believing that NATO expansion was a bad idea that Russia has legitimate cause to be alarmed by and being unconditionally opposed to the Putin regime and its aggression in Ukraine.

AOC walked back her endorsement when Sanders wouldn’t distance himself from Rogan.

I voted for Hillary over Trump, and think she would have served OK as President. But I don’t like either of the Clintons. I find them both to be shallow grifters and I resent the general culture of triangulating, centrist Democratic politics they helped birth in the 90’s. I hope her defeat in 2016 has taught Democrats that there’s no future in that. For god’s sake, stand for something besides your own fortunes as good little institutional meritocrats who always have a slice of pie for right-wing extremists.

That article does not support your claim.

Which you don’t even need to click on the link to see! Literally the first sentence of the story says the opposite of what he says it does. Bad trollski, no vodka.

Upon further review, the article seems like biased bullshit, relying on anonymous sources to paint a picture of tension between AOC and Bernie. It describes Rogan as having “endorsed” Bernie and Bernie as having “embraced” that endorsement, but doesn’t support either of those assertions.

Rogan said he would probably vote for Bernie; in other words, he was thinking about it and still might NOT vote for him. Never in my life have I ever heard such a statement described as an “endorsement”.

The only statement quoted from the Bernie campaign (not Bernie himself) was boilerplate “big tent, welcome those with opposing views while not compromising our values blah blah” and said nothing specifically complimentary about Rogan at all. I guess by "embracing’, the author means Sanders failed to say “Hey, podcaster with millions of listeners, I denounce you and and your listeners as irredeemable deplorables and specifically urge you NOT to vote for me!”. And the funny thing is that the people mounting this line of attack have no problem in any other context calling Bernie a “purity pony” who can’t deal with coalitions and compromise. Critical thinking is not their forte.

I stayed out of this thread for days because I knew I’d end up rehashing these same arguments that I’m so fucking tired of. You can’t reason with a Bernie basher any more than you can with a QAnon guy, because they didn’t reason themselves into those positions. And yet here we are…

Nancy Pelosi is an insider trading embarrassment. I hate that she’s exhibit A of the Right’s ‘YoUr SiDe DoeS iT ToO!’ apologism for the Kleptocracy our government has become.
