So, I’ve been watching Arrow on CW. I don’t hate it, even though Green Arrow is my favorite comic character of all time.
The thing that I look forward to the most is John Barrowman. I’m a huge Who fan as well as Torchwood. So, it gives me such pleasure to see Capt. Jack getting work.
Who do we think he’s going to portray? Will he be an already established comic character or does anyone think he’ll be made up for the show?
Me, I think he might actually be Deathstroke. Stands to reason that they would want him to stick around, so he could easily go from villian to anti-hero in the span of a season or two.
He would be a terrible Slade. (Who doesn’t have much interaction with Ollie in the comics, anyway, so would be a bad choice.)
Merlyn - an archer from the League of Assassins, who’s tangled with Ollie a couple times, wouldn’t be a bad choice to use, and wouldn’t be a terrible choice to cast Barrowman as.
I believe you are correct there. Ollie’s best friend is named Merlyn.
I think I read that the gang named after playing cards (can’t remember what they are called) are going to be regular bad guys, so he might fit in there somewhere.
The wikipedia article lists a lot of the future casting. It mentions Barrowman, although it’s not terribly helpful.

Production
Arrow was developed by Andrew Kreisberg, Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim, while the pilot episode was directed by David Nutter, who also directed the pilot for Smallville. The series was picked up by The CW Television Network on May 11, 2012. The series will introduce additional DC Comics characters throughout the season, including: Darren Shahlavi as Constantine Drakon; Michael Rowe as Deadshot; Kelly Hu as China White; Jeffrey Nordling as Frank Bertinelli; and Jeffrey C. Robinson as Slade Wilson/Deathstroke. It was announced on October 15, 2012, that Tahmoh Penikett will portray Tom Salvati, the right hand man of Frank Bertinelli. The studio did not specify if Penikett’s role would be a recurring role or just a guest appearance.
Man, a lot of these character names are just awful.
Pilot looked promising, but subsequent episodes require a subscription to Hulu Plus.
I find that that Black Widow move where she jumps up and grabs somebody around the neck with her thighs is way sexier than when a guy does it to another guy, but maybe that’s just me.
My TiVo seems to have a block when it comes to CW shows: last year it wouldn’t record Ringer at all (though it always thought it did), and it recorded the Arrow pilot with no problem but then what it said was the second episode was actually an ep of Numbers. I liked the pilot enough to watch more, but I’m not sure I liked it enough to go out of my way to watch more.
(Except for the John Barrowman episode. I will probably go out of my way to watch that one. :))
I blush to say that I’ve been watching this show and enjoying it. They play havoc with the DC character (Speedy is the nickname of his younger sister, rather than his sidekick) but it’s an interesting show of itself. There are three plots each week:
The “villain of the week” plot so that each episode has some stands alone element
The backstory: what happened on the island, how he changed and why; we learn more each week and it’s got actual story line to it
The current arch, with his mother and family and lawyer/sweetheart (the soap opera)
I’ve found the show entertaining enough. I need to add (edit) that I stopped reading the comics in about 1967, so most of this stuff is new to me.
I’ve seen a little of it, and the part that gets me is that he’s killing guys. I mean, duh, arrows kill, but it’s just amazing cold-blooded. Poor mooks!
Also, whoever is in charge of casting must have a seriously lucky rabbits foot. Not only do we get Capt. Jack, but I just read that John Crichton himself will be showing up. Add that to the already impressive cast (including Harry Dresden). Now all they need is someone from BSG and the X-Files and my world will be officially rocked!
I dislike the phrase “guilty pleasure”, because I certainly don’t feel actual GUILT, per se… but Arrow is definitely my guilty pleasure show right now. Just good fun!
