Who drinks what straight, or Am I a pansy?

Irn-Bru

It’s Scottish for Moxie.

Bravo, sir. You are a right-thinking citizen.

So…that makes you a pansy–not every straight guy with good taste is gay, you dBag.

Tanqueray Rangpur is another gin that is quite delicious straight. Although I’ll usually take my gin with tonic or in a Martini.

Cazadores Tequila is a personal favorite for drinking straight–that is, sipping. In Jalisco, they’ll have a glass of grapefruit soda on the side.

Not much of a whiskey drinker–but I’ll sip a shot or two of Powers’ on St Patrick’s Day. (Alongside some Guinness.)

I was offered a shot of Svedka vodka & found it tasty. Which means it’s my choice for vodka cocktails.

In my experience, gulping shots down is a recipe for disaster. Sipping the straight stuff has its place. But a well-constructed cocktail is so civilized…

It’s Alive!!!

Welcome to the board, Fortis Lombardi. Since you’re new here, you should know that it’s against the rules to insult other posters here unless you are posting in The BBQ Pit. Please don’t do this again.

This is an old thread, but we usually don’t worry about zombie threads in Cafe Society.

I drink brandy (my preferred tipple straight) and scotch straight. I also have no objections to drinking them over ice. If I want to get smashed on brandy (like the last Final Four Saturday, when I put away about 750 ml, I mix it with water.
I will mix bourbon and whiskey with water. When I go to Aggie’s, my preferred drink is Jack and Coke.
I rarely drink anything other than brandy, beer, whiskey (including scotch), and red wine.
I will stay sober before I drink gin and Everclear.

I drink, in order of quantity:

Gin shaken with ice and strained into a Martini glass, no vermouth, but a couple olives are acceptable.
Scotch neat
Cognac neat
Vodka straight from the freezer

I will on very rare occasions, probably fewer than one a year, drink a Manhattan or a Rob Roy, but I’m not a fan of mixed drinks generally.

Anyone who puts a mixer in a single Malt whisky should have their testicles ripped off and then be charged for the process.
I also drink dark rum straight.

That apart I never drink gin on its own as I loathe the taste of it and seldom drink vodka without something in it.

Never drink white rum either with or without anything in it because the taste is so vile it cannot be disguised.

Well said.
As I sit here guzzling a gin & tonic.

I used to LOVE taking a straight shot of vodka! It was like…being zapped by an electric-blue bolt of lightning. In a good way!

Pretty much anything that costs more than $25/bottle is worth drinking straight, in my experience. Anything that costs much less than that isn’t worth drinking at all, for the most part.

Tequila: Anything that is 100% agave is worth drinking straight or on the rocks. And while I have nothing in particular against Patron, it’s nothing special for the price. It only seems that way compared to Cuervo. I’d rather buy Herradura and spend the extra $10 on a good cigar. I usually drink my tequila in a margarita (in the traditional style, not the Applebee’s style) but not always.

Whiskey: Bourbon is my drink of choice, but I drink Scotch now and again. Makers is good neat or on the rocks. I do like a Manhattan (especially when I can find decent rye) or an old-fashioned, but I’ll drink good bourbon straight any day. I’ve never mixed Scotch.

Rum: The one time in the last 10 years that I bought rum, I made sure to get good stuff. It was pretty good neat, but a little sweeter than I prefer.

Vodka: What’s the point?

Haven’t had gin in a long, long time.

Vodka: drank a bit in high school and college. It’s kind of nice, I guess, if I really want to just get drunk real quick or if I want to add some kick to something mild. Tito’s is my favorite for this: an inexpensive but pretty excellent local vodka.

The first time I ever had whiskey (apart from a bit of Gentleman Jack when I was already drunk enough for everything to taste good) was a shot of Jameson at a stitch-and-bitch party. I looked quite dismayed when I brought the glass down. The hostess was worried: “You didn’t like it?”

“Worse,” I said. “I did.”

It’s my favorite for a small glass late in the evening whiling away the hours before sleep. I also discovered I have an appreciation for good Scotch, and I can tell the difference between something dreadful and something marvelous. I know a few people with deep pockets, good taste, and Scotch-lovers’ hospitality: the only thing, as far as I can tell, that a lover of Scotch loves more than Scotch is feeding it to his friends.

My absolute favorite liquor of any kind is probably good port. I prefer a nice tawny to a ruby port, and I am told by a friend who keeps bar that I’m the first woman he’s met who does. The first port I had was a 40-year-old Taylor Fladgate – in a coffee mug, since our host was out of better vessels. I was absolutely enchanted by the flavor and pronounced it the best thing that had ever happened in my mouth. :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh – I do like mixed drinks well enough. I’m just hard to get drunk, enough so that it’s quite hard for me to get even warm unless I’m drinking something straight and hard (hush, you guys). It was through dogged effort that I got happy on beer for the first time a few months ago.

Try some good (Peruvian) Pisco, aromatic or “acholado” varieties, straight.
Pisco sour will be enjoyable with good quality Pisco and well made.

Seconding Hendrick’s, and also putting in a vote for New Amsterdam gin. I have never found one that is as smooth as it, and it doesn’t even have the same price tag as Hendrick’s, although the bottle is not even half as cute

Question: does “straight” imply no ice, either? If so, I don’t drink ANYTHING straight.

If it includes ice, I will drink various alcohol-only drinks, but not anything by itself. (Meaning that aside from a splash of citrus, drinks like gin and lime (hold the tonic, sometimes!) or various drinks with vodka + flavored spirit, but I don’t sit down to a glass of whiskey or scotch or tequila, etc.)

As a defender of fine Kentucky bourbon, I have to chime in. First of all, Jack Daniels is NOT bourbon, its a Tennessee whiskey. Secondly, you can do a LOT better than Jim Beam.

Try a single-barrel bourbon sometime. The idea of drinking fine bourbons neat is alien to me…it isn’t scotch. Good bourbons were meant for sipping with a couple large cubes of ice, particularly those that range into the 100+ proof range (which may also require a splash of H2O).

Eagle Rare, Blanton’s, Old Pogue, Evan Williams…mmmmmmm…

Gin drinker here. Don’t quote me.

Sambuca is one of my favorites. I also like a shot of Southern Comfort.

True, more or less what I said, but today, I think it’s more like $30+
