I got this spam today:

That which brings the highest happiness!!

After another recent spam of this type in January 2005 we did some research. Here is what we found: Gauranga (Gouranga) was a nickname of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, a monk in India who 500 years ago founded the branch of Hinduism that during the 20th century was brought to the west by ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness, better known as the “Hare Krishna” sect).

It has been rumoured that the Scottish branch of ISKCON has been trying to spread the name of their spiritual ancestor through a guerilla-type campaign. The name appeared on motorway bridges in the North of England and on various stickers, causing people to wonder what it was all about. Now it’s on to email spam. We have no idea if there is any substance to these rumours. It could just be some kind of weird joke, like the “Gouranga” references in the Playstation videogame “Grand Theft Auto”.

I’ve never got Gouranga spam. But I see the word whenever I go onto the motorway.

I haven’t received the spam, but I’ve heard the name before. There was a Hare Krishna metal band in Eastern Europe called “Transcendance” that played the local festival circuit. One of their songs included the lyrics “Gournaga, Gouranga, Gouranga, hey, hey” repeated about a hundred twenty bajillion times. Thus, I will never forget that name. (Funny enough, the band actually wasn’t all that bad.)
