who else is watching April the pregnant giraffe

April showers.

Damn, no April the 2nd baby.

These guys just seriously have no idea how to predict when she’ll go, do they?

I have been watching her for a couple of days now, not just because her baby’s due but also because giraffes are my favourite animals…and it’s somehow soothing just watching her plodding around doing her stuff.

I’m watching! I think, after all this time, the baby should be named Patience.

I was fortunate enough to be a “zookeeper for a day” at our local zoo and I spent the whole day in the giraffe area. Such beautiful creatures. According to the head keeper, there isn’t much chance of saving them from extinction so they are likely to only exist in zoos which will be very sad indeed.

Apparently, they aren’t sure when she got knocked up. There were several, um, “encounters” that may have led to conception. So they started the live feed somewhat before the first possible time of delivery, but no, they really don’t know when it’ll happen. Udders are swollen, vaginal secretions have increased, she’s not eating much and she’s a bit irritable, so…y’know, sounds like third trimester in human pregnancy to me!

This thread inspired me to check in on April. Such a beautiful animal.

Do they let her outside during the day? Her pen seems pretty small.

She’s obviously well cared for. I saw videos of her interacting with staff and the vet.

Her pen is one of the biggest indoor stalls in the country. Giraffes don’t actually need a lot of space except for up. And yes, she has a door open to the outside much of the time. They opened it about an hour and a half ago, and 45 minutes ago she spent a little time with her head sticking out, but decided not to go outside. Giraffes are very sensitive to the cold, so if it’s too cold out, they keep the door closed.

Interesting. I didn’t see her earlier with the door open.

Thanks

I’ve caught the stall cleaner a couple times. She shovels the poop and at times uses her foot as a backstop so it doesn’t slip off the front of the shovel. I think I’d change before I got in my car.

So far no sign of labor, in my totally amateur opinion.

I just read the tiny print under the youtube feed and found that there’s a site you can enter your number to get text updates:

ETA: It’s $4.99. I didn’t see that until after I posted.

April sticking her tongue out at the camera while she’s waiting for carrots is adorable.

the are for-profit, as I said. a lot of people signed up because they have been staying up at night so they don’t miss the birth and now they can go to sleep, knowing they will get a text.

this weekend April’s door was open more than once and I never saw her go outside. since Friday morning, at least, they were really sure the birth was very close.

I think so, too. how sad to hear they will probably go extinct in the wild. :frowning:

I love it when April bends over to reach hay and she lets one of her hind legs dangle.

Jackie, don’t click on this ;): Evolena the feral cat is beginning contractions (still pre-labor),

Oh great, now I’m going to be watching kittens. Just great. Squeee!

My cat Atilla is the product of a feral mother and was born in my back yard. The only pet I’ve ever had that I know their exact birthday. He’s going to be eleven years old at the end of the month.

omg, even the commercial was cute! (gimpy kitty who will be getting “bionic legs”) - thanks for the link.

I don’t know how anybody gets anything done anymore, seriously.

I read somewhere that they had kept the door closed because it was too cold outside and they were aiming at a constant indoor temperature for her. Then when they did open the door, she didn’t want to go outside.

She is beautiful to watch though, it is such a shame they are liable to become extinct and for that, I am grateful to the zoos for keeping them around for us to enjoy.

They just let her neighbor in for a visit, and the first thing she(?) did was sniff April’s nethers and then made a really funny face with her head high in the air. Giraffe midwife?

(Oh, I think it may be daddy. His patches kind of look like it. And now they’re necking. So cute!)

I’m too busy watching Fiona the Hippo over at the Cincinnati Zoo!

I wish she’d hurry up and do SOMETHING. I’m almost as bored with this whole thing as she is.
