April’s cam is offline so now I’m watching Corsica sleep. I’m watching cats sleep in-person and online. I may need that Fiona link. Or I could actually try to get something done.
And I see April is into younger guys. She’s 15, but Oliver is only 5.
I watched a horse give birth once. The sac didn’t rupture until the baby came out–she was standing up and (after active labor for several hours) she dropped this baby horse onto the ground and the sac burst. There was an enormous amount of fluid if memory serves.
She’s getting close! According to her keepers, her back end has “some significant bulging occurring.”
maybe, we’ve seen them report “any minute now” changes since last Friday morning. hey, a week ago!

I think it’s about time for two of the keepers go in, stand on either side of her, and SKWEEEEEEEEEEZE!
I learned a lot from this sleeping video. I had no idea giraffes could twist their necks around.
Skip towards the end. Amazing huh?
This has become so boring I’d rather watch the breeding process. All those legs!!
She can rest her head on her back, and in addition, can tuck it under one of her hind legs. Cute! I wonder if they do this in the wild, or if it’s only safe to do so if there are no predators around.
That is pretty cool, especially considering that they only have seven cervical vertebrae, just like us. The difference is that theirs are ball and socket joints.
Well, today I learned about ossicones. Much more fun than epoxy floors in a manufacturing environmentt…
Evolene is having her kittens - 4 so far and all alive. The first was breech, and was possibly dead, but he moved! So emotional!

It was so weird in Memphis. We had a baby giraffe born a few days ago, but it wasn’t mentioned on the news at all until people started asking about a video that was going viral that a tourist took. We hadn’t even heard she was pregnant or maybe the calf came much earlier than expected. A few days later a zoo official said they weren’t going to speak about it until it’s first neonatal check-up. It was very odd how they put it. I don’t think they wanted the public to know at first, maybe worrying it wasn’t going to make it. They made an official announcement yesterday though. She’s healthy, she’s just been rejected by her mama. I don’t even know if THEY knew she was pregnant. Usually they keep them separate when they know they’re about to give birth, like with April. We have a stand where we can hand feed the giraffes. It was one of the coolest moments of my life feeding one and looking in to her eyes. We were face-to-face!
If you’d like to get an idea of what April’s delivery might look the video is here: http://wreg.com/2017/04/06/memphis-zoo-announces-birth-of-baby-giraffe/
Does April ever sleep?
They don’t sleep that much, giraffes. Maybe they lay down and take a 30 minute nap two or three times a night, but that’s about it, and I think they can sleep standing up if need be, too.
I like it when Oliver is seen pacing in the adjoining pen, like any expectant father.
from that behavior I guessed he knew she was pregnant and he was worried about her. but the fans on facebook told me he wants to get over to her and sniff/taste her urine so if she is ovulating he can mate with her.
I preferred thinking he was worried about her :o
At this point, I hereby nominate the OP for Most Ironic Username/Thread Title Evar.
So apparently Evolene is having trouble nursing her kittens, so Corsica is helping out. (And the human is also trying to bottlefeed some of the weaker ones, and Corsica is NOT happy that someone is trying to touch “her” kittens).
ironic how? ![]()
