She’s such a good mama. I hope she turns the corner and doesn’t have to go back to the colony. I also hope Evo recovers quickly. She looked so exhausted after giving birth. It’s a load on Corsica, but I’m glad Evo can focus on herself.
Did you see this morning, when Oliver was briefly allowed into April’s pen? She started nuzzling him and was obviously happy to be with him. He basically ignored her. Prick.
The other ones aren’t looking so good, either. I also hope Evo pulls through. Nature can be such a bitch. Corsica’s kittens, though, what little bruisers!
Four of Evolene’s kittens have died. Just heartbreaking, especially when they seemed so vigorous immediately after birth. But, yeah, Corsica’s kittens seem enormous compared to Evolene’s. They are a joy to watch!
Hey, you work at the Memphis Zoo? Throw Matt a high five for me, and tell him I promise I won’t let my wife won’t steal the new baby hippo whenever we visit.
She still looks quite comfortable. She seems to get more outdoor time lately. Today she was out long enough for them to completely change whatever is on the floor of her stall. What would a giraffe dose of Pitocin be?
Yes, she lost them all. They were so tiny. She was dumped on a dairy farm where apparently people like to dump cats. The owners are kind-hearted but were overwhelmed with all the cats. They’re willing to let them live on their property with some help, so the rescue is supplying food and is spaying/neutering everyone. This kitty, Evolene, is about four and has diarrhea and bad dental disease. She couldn’t eat and was skin and bones when they got her. She’s in very poor condition and is even more fragile after giving birth. They were only able to catch her a few weeks ago and were hoping she’d improve faster. She’s was afraid at first, but she’s not feral as she’s now happy to be petted and given attention.
I quit reading the Facebook page when it started to turn into a bunch of self-righteous slap-fighting, and only check the live feed once or twice a day for a couple minutes out of mild “did she have it yet?” curiosity.
Another thing bugging me is that the park owner is getting downright mercenary. I don’t blame him for trying to make money off this random thing that happened out of nowhere, and he is doing a lot to raise awareness about endangered giraffes in the wild and donating a lot of money to conservation. However, “Pay to subscribe to our text alerts so you can see pictures slightly sooner than everyone else! Limited edition April T-shirts, new designs coming soon! Buy your April prints before they sell out! Plush giraffes! Sure you can buy those elsewhere, but they don’t have April’s name on 'em!”
The live chat (which I now make a point of avoiding) is especially bad. If I had a nickel for every time I see a similar exchange to this, I could buy my own giraffe:
chatter: can you slow down the chat? It’s too fast for me to read.
chat mod: The chat is fine. Just scroll up.
typical chatter: DID SHE HAV BABBY YET
chat mod 2: BTW the chat scrolls so fast we have trouble seeing your questions. Use Superchat (i.e. pay money to have your question appeared in a big colored box) so we can see it!
another chatter: no one answered my superchat question
:smack:
Yeesh, this is about the most “first world problems” rant I’ve ever made.
That’d be like a Christmas present to the conspiracy theorists. “How do you know that’s her calf? How do you know they didn’t just smuggle one into the yard while she was outside? And she’s not thinner. It’s just the camera angle.” Ditto if she has it while the webcam is down.
