Ukrainian rock is, I think, underappreciated here in the US. Vopli Vidodplyasova is famous and popular there; but virtually unknown here. Their lead singer, Oleh Skrypka, is an amazing combination of intellectual, musician, and comedian. There’s a lot of video featuring them available on youtube, though much of it is home video of dodgey quality.
This one is a favorite of mine. Skrypka plays the accordian here in a way that you basically never hear in the US. No, I don’t know what the song is about.
In this video, in which they are playing for laughs, they are making light of what my wife calls “deep village guys.” Here, the appropriate term might be something like hicks or hoopies. Even without the album cover shot at the beginning, the music should be familiar to many of you. The lyrics are different. He’s basically asking his girlfriend to come out to the clubs with him.
