Who else reads the snarkpit?

I read there. Post there too. It can be hilarious, stupid (tarded), fucked up and vicious all at once. Good, if tarded, times!

I went there once to see what all of the hullaballoo was about. I’m not into toxic posting so I didn’t last long.

I voted no, but I did read it once by accident. I googled myself (I know, lame) and found I’d been trashed there about a post I’d made here.

I shrugged it off.

I used to read it a lot about a year ago, when I first heard about it. Mostly boring stuff but you would occasionally find links to some particular nice meltdown or really stupid threads.

But most of the time it would be, as The Hamster King put it:

The ads were awsome though.

They did do one good thing once, back on DeadJournal. Mods, I hope it’s okay if I get specific; it’s hard enough to explain as it happened.

This thread started getting mocked in the Snarkpit pretty soon after it opened. The poster had, not long before, started another Pit thread that backfired on her, so this new one was at first scoffed at on DJ as a similar example of drama-queening. People started wondering exactly how a guy could lose his left arm and right leg in a collision, and finally someone crossed over to ask the OP for more details of the accident.

After a lot of discussion on both SDMB and DJ, it became clear that the poster had never met this “father figure”. He was, however, a regular on her own board (link was in her sig). Lot of inconsistencies and implausibilities in his stories. Lot of lecherous remarks to female posters, on a board that was almost exclusively female. (And touchy-feely, Lifetimey, so what was this old biker dude doing there?)

And at this point it was the snarkers, not the Dopers, who hounded the poster for any identifying info she could dig up on this guy. She produced a photo, which, when combined with other stats, made a frighteningly close match with the stats of a registered sex offender. More nudging from snarkers to give up this “daddy” nonsense, and the poster banned him from her site, warned another member who was vulnerable to this guy, and all seemed to be well from then on; of course I’ll never know for sure. Anyway, it stands out in my mind as the one time snarkers did something constructive.

Let’s not forget the whole Kaitlyn debacle. (I give them credit for that)

I dropped by a few times, oh, probably four or five years ago, when I was spending a lot of time in the chatroom, but it never interested me.

Bunch of whiny little pussies who feel the need to anonymously complain about one board on a completely different board.

Some people never get past junior high.

I wasn’t around for that. What was that one about? I just read the one about the sex offender, and wow.

From memory, Kaitlyn used to be Number Six (and changed his name to that). He didn’t realize that all his past posts were still associated with both names.

He then claimed that he was a transgendered elementary school teacher, and posted a long story about the noble principal at his school who supported him against the nasty bigoted parents and so forth and so on.

Trouble was, his stories became increasingly contradictory and bizarre. He claimed to be (at various times) a Jew, an atheist Jew, and a Jewish Christian. The time lines he claimed for his teaching career didn’t make any sense either.

The punch line was his claim that his wife was a fourteen year old supermodel who worked at McDonald’s, and who had escaped from a North Korean concentration camp and made her way to America. She supposedly accepted his sex change without hesitation and became a lesbian to stay with him.

A poster from the Snarkpit named Can of Pineapples (who was, IIRC, a sock of some Doper or other - possibly Satan) posted a bunch of links of the various contradictions and impossibilities in Kaitlyn’s posts, including (I believe) a link to a site showing that the picture he had posted claiming to be his wife was actually a Hong Kong actress.

Kaitlyn admitted the whole thing was lies, and was banned.

I can dig up the thread perhaps, if you like.

Regards,
Shodan

I didn’t even know that forum existed until I stumbled into it on accident about three years ago. They are mean. Not garden-variety ‘‘ur a loser’’ mean, but, ‘‘we mock your agony and delight in your Mom’s slow and painful death from cancer’’ mean. Essentially, they’ve invented a system that rewards cruelty–solid evidence that anonymity breeds antisocial behavior. (Which to me, speaks to how powerful social censure is as a means of controlling behavior.)

So my honest, unbiased assessment is that they are cowardly, evil people–not Ultimate Evil, like the Wicked Witch of the West, but petty and irrelevant evil, like the flying monkeys.

And like the flying monkeys, occasionally they are good for a laugh. I did vanity search myself there once, and I found an old quote that still makes me giggle:

At the time, this felt like a reasonably accurate analysis of my weirdness. I was rather moved.

Overall, though, not really my cup of tea. Because, you know, evil.

This is so perfect that it should be their motto.

I first found the place over five years ago. It had to do with the “death” of WallyM7. Whenever he was brought up we’d always be fed the line of bullshit about the “much beloved poster who tragically died.” Any whiff that he faked his death would be disappeared but the staff here. (In fact, there was a time that even mentioning the snarkboards here, let alone providing a link, would get you warned at the very least.) The case was laid out on the snarkboards and finally the truth came out.

There are things that I don’t like about the place but I do at least skim it most days. The place would have become irrelevant years ago if not for some poorly thought out censorship at the SDMB way back when. Now it’s entrenched.

Sounds plausible to me.

Thread here: Get your fucking facts right (Kaitlyn/Priceguy) - The BBQ Pit - Straight Dope Message Board

(Courtesy of The Memorable SDMB Thread Anthology - The Giraffe Boards)

I go there, but I find 99% of the posts to be yawn-inducing. It was much, much funnier years ago.

Sometimes they make a good point here and there, but most of the time, it reads like a sanitized version of 4chan.

I always wondered just what led to the creation of a separate blog or message board for snarking on the SDMB. Something Awful also has a snark board, the name of which I can’t remember. Are anti-boards common for large message boards like the SDMB?

Beats me.

I will say there HAVE been at least two cases where someone’s personal info was posted at the snackpit and then used to harass someone.

Most of the time, though, it’s just a gossip site that’s gone downhill. People take it far, far too seriously – I think the main reason they do is BECAUSE it’s anonymous.
I do like my designation over there - “Guiniepig” Don’t ask me why, I just find it amusing.
(And when is Guin-Loving Nonny getting his bus fare, dammit!!!)

You have your own nom de snarc?

I vaguely remember a few references to it, but I don’t think I’d ever gotten a specific URL until this thread. Browsed around a bit; don’t feel much need to go back.

Probably for the best it’s not searchable. I don’t think I’d like what I’d find.

Yep – I’m special. And you’re not. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve always assumed that Guin-loving nonny is actually you, is that not the case?

Never heard of it and probably better off not knowing what it is.
