Worth repeating.
Yep. “I will not give you the pleasure of seeing me backing down.”
I don’t know if it’s so much “the liberals”, so much as it’s “someone”.
It’s the concept that he/they are sticking it to someone who deserves it, that fosters this sense of sacrifice in a good cause for them.
Of course, “someone who deserves it” is a catch-all group that basically means anyone who doesn’t conform to their particular worldview and set of preconceived notions about gender, sexuality, economic theory, citizenship, etc…
It seems to me at least, to be rooted in the idea that there’s some sort of Platonic ideal of the world and how things in it should be, behave, look, act, etc… and anyone/anything that diverges from that ideal needs to be hammered down flat so that it does. They think that their current views on everything are the normal and natural way things should be. Which is kind of ignorant in light of historical and archaeological evidence, but it goes with the territory.
It’s a fundamental outlook on life sort of thing. Where most of us see someone wearing a jockstrap and feathers at a Pride parade and think “That guy is living his best life. Good for him.”, the people on the other side of the aisle see someone who’s not conforming to how they believe men should be in terms of sexuality, dress, or behavior, and it angers them because they don’t understand it, and because it challenges them. So they endeavor to hammer him down flat as a result.
In terms of Iran, they’ve been set up through 40 some-odd years of news coverage, their own actions, and our own actions as a standing enemy of the United States. It’s not like Iran was chosen out of a hat; they have been stirring shit and adversarial to the United States for decades. To the Trump supporters this is them being a nail that’s needed to be hammered down for a LONG time, and they’re rejoicing that it’s finally being done, whether or not it makes sense now, whether or not it’s a good use of our resources, and whether or not it hurts them personally at the gas pump or wherever.
That’s the problem here; they view Iran’s defiant existence as something that needs correction, and are all for it, even if it requires sacrifices on their part (and ours).
Fanatics, contrarians, morons and otherwise rotten people.
The few Trump supporters I know have been largely silent. Most won’t admit things are going poorly though I had one tell me the tariffs weren’t going as well as they hoped.
Interesting. William Gibson described this type of people in this area in Mona Lisa Overdrive:
He’d grown up in white Jersey stringtowns where nobody knew shit about anything and hated anybody who did.
“Stringtown” seems to come from Lincoln, NJ, which was once called Stringtown:
Iranians were killing their own people and it looked likely to continue. I don’t believe the regime was ready to fall and certainly wouldn’t have left without millions more dead. The rest of the world outside of Israel looked disinterested and only care now because the nations buying cheap Iranian oil are now having to looking else ware. This situation is collectively the worlds fault and responsibility which even now many are shirking.
Trump is a fool prone to do foolish things, but I am not willing to put all of this on him.
Well sure, Netanyahu helped.
Israel was killing far more civilians in territories it controls that Iran, shouldn’t that ahve been “the world’s” first priority then?
And none of the people involved in this disaster cared about that at all. Except for the ones who wanted to kill even more Iranians, that is.
This. A thousands times this.
That’s not surprising since a “self-described MAGA voter” is by definition a Trump supporter. Someone who doesn’t support Trump would not describe themselves as a MAGA voter.
Trumpists seem very happy indeed.
Iranians shot innocent Iranians protesting their pitiful situation, Israel tries with every missile to kill the people deciding to wage war on Israel. Those two are not the same and as far as quantity of dead are concerned Iran is doing far worse already and it could only have gotten worse.
The world, “Won’t somebody do something?”
5 seconds later
“Won’t America stop doing anything!?”
More like
The world, “Won’t somebody do something?”
US: Bombs the shit out of Iran, killing civilians, and doubling the world price of oil, and not helping the people of Iran at all.
one month later:
“Are you people fucking insane?”
Except that I know a whole lot of them who are not happy. That’s kind of why I started the thread. To be sure, anecdotes is not polling data (and even then, polling doesn’t show true feelings), but I’ve read and seen a whole lot of bubbling discontent within the MAGA ranks. Such as, as mentioned, isolationist MAGAs being pissed off about “more wars in the Middle East,” anti-Semites mad about Trump support for Israel and Netanyahu, etc.
That’s not how international institutions see it, several of them have called what Israel is doing “genocide” and/or “ethnic cleansing”.
But that gets to the nucleus of the problem who is “the world”? who decides what warrants intervention and what doesn’t? the UN? Donald J. Trump?.
Having a country kill civilians is bad, bombing those same civilians in order to “liberate them” (and fail at that even) is worse.
Say Trump doesn’t exist and our current president decides with all the other nations to stick with the decades of sanctions that haven’t worked. An insurrection emerges after innocents are tired of getting shot and in order to bring light and focus to their struggle a few hide in the mountains near the Strait and every now and again attack an oil tanker. No insurance company will insure craft in the Persian Gulf and we are exactly in the same spot. Only now we might attack these freedom loving insurrectionists instead of the regime causing the problems.
Right, but I think that poisons the well. No one liked COVID and our sitting president did not help, but no one was asking, “So which conservatives like COVID?”
I know. The OP asked who is happy. People who say they are MAGA are happy.
