Who in society decided that short "clean" haircuts are the ONLY ones that look good on men?

Knock yourself out. I still won’t hire a hippie.

You have long hair!? Man, you are SUCH a fucking rebel.

“Hippie” isn’t just about hair length. A real hippie is dirty, unwashed and smells of pot and patchoullie.

Oh true? My hair being long means i’m a hippie or have hippie-like beliefs?

Wasn’t aware of that.

Francis Russel, the 5th Duke of Bedford (1765-1802) probably deserves as much credit for this as anyone. As a protest against the 1795 tax on hair powder, he adopted a short, unpowdered hairstyle known as the “Bedford Crop”. Prior to that, gentlemen commonly had hair (or wigs) at least long enough to put into a short ponytail.

At around the same time there was also a Neoclassical craze going on, and (as puzzlegal has already noted) men of Ancient Rome cut their hair short. Some short, popular men’s haircuts of the early 19th century were called the Caesar, the Titus, and the Brutus. Long hair on men came to be seen as old-fashioned and the look largely died off.

Long powdered hair and wigs have never come back into style, but by the late 1960s long hair for men had been out of fashion long enough to come back in as a counterculture look.

I used to have long hair down past my shoulders and I got a lot of nice comments. It’s been short now for years though, At least for me though if I grow it out there’s always that awkward in-between phase where it does look bad for a few months. Some people just have that great hair that looks good at any length though. Honestly ever since I got out of the military I start to feel uncomfortable if I let my hair get very long at all. I’ve thought about trying to grow it a little bit shaggy though, but nowhere near as long as I had it in the past. I think for a guy it kind of depends on body type too, when I had long hair I was skinnier, and now I’m a lot larger and muscular, longer hair might look weird with that body type, like Fabio or something, ok I’m not anywhere near that muscular.

You might try lengthening your paragraphs.

Hippy.

I rock the high and tight. Zero on the sides, one on top. I rather like it. I find it refreshing and hate when my hair gets long.

In my humble opinion I always think high and tights look ridiculous like a guy from the 1950’s found a time machine, it looks even more ridiculous when the person has any type of balding. If you’re gonna go the short hair route, the fade looks way better to me.

Agreed. I always get it faded and luckily if they screw up the fade I can just have them go a one all-over.

Luckily I’m mixed so I don’t come off as a skinhead.

I think barbers decided; for obvious reasons.

justjake and I live together. MY most prized possession is the fine gold pocket watch my grandfather left me.

And I know JUST what to get him for Christmas this year!

probably another one of those post-WWII US things that held on for a while.

That’s what I was thinking.

Fwiw, my husband and son both have long hair. My son grew his out first and it’s thick and wavy and glorious (I’m very jealous). My husband has a great job in IT for a hospital group. Times and norms are changing.

Oh, and you might want to consider a slight trim to the ends to keep your hair healthy and reduce breakage. I trim my son’s for him about every 6 mos or so. I only take of like 1/4 of an inch. His is to his waist.

There’s a controversy going on in England right now about police with beards. http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/uk-new-police-dress-code-include-beard-nets-1512659

It’s all about peoples obsession with controlling other people … It is so bizarre that for thousands of years it’s been a hot topic.

My hair - or my trim level of that hair is comfortable for me, I hope yours is for you too.

My sister and I have nice hair, but my brother has a real crown of glory on his head, really beautiful hair, he wanted to cut it off when he was around 9 and that’s it - never seen it again,

Who in society decided that short “clean” haircuts are the ONLY ones that look good on men?

New fads look great to a lot of people. I remember reading a survey in the 1960s where ladies said long hair on men looked sexy and made men look intelligent etc. Thirty years later, the same answers were given regarding men with short hair. I guess people get bored with old styles, and new ones look smart. It goes up and down.

It was in the bible:

Styles come in and out of style, and they vary by class. when I was in High School the style of the preppies and upper class types was long hair and for the blue collar types short hair. I recall clearly the disdain the preppies had for short hair.

Then 10 years later it was the reverse. The preppies more upper class types went back to short hair and the blue collar types took up the long hair.

Have no idea where it all is now.

But it does not define how long is “long”.
