Who is Captain Arthur Roth?

My brother’s gf just got assigned to a new school in the Cleveland Municipal School District - Captain Arthur Roth Elementary.

Most Cleveland schools are named after people. This name makes my brother and me giggle.

We tried Googling for the name but all of the hits were for the school itself. I googled “Arthur Roth” and came up with lots of info on “Arthur Roth, Mr. Long Island” but I don’t think he’s the same guy.

The online resources for the school offer no help. Unfortunately since the girlfriend was notified of her new position (after being laid off all summer) 24 hours before she was to report, I don’t think she’ll have time to ask who this guy is.

I recall us having figured out a school’s namesake on this board before. Any insight on this one?

I came up with an Arthur Roth who was in the army by googling Arthur Roth, but the article doesn’t mention the rank he came out of WWII with:

Or, perhaps it’s named after a fictional Civil War-era gravedigger?

There was also a prominent New York banker, alleged to be more customer-focused than most, but few speak ill of the dead…

and a New York Finance Commissioner (younger than the now dead banker):

I swear I won’t post in this thread again, but I came up with a MUCH BETTER bet… a children’s author who wrote “Iceberg Hermit,” a book suitable for 5-7 year-olds.

He was probably the Arthur Roth who was Captain of the Department of Public Safety in Cleveland during the 30s. Check page 3 of this pdf.

The school was built in 1965, and named for the policeman who had died just previously and was head of the juvenile crime unit. Don’t know if the same guy from the 30’s.

Tell your bro’s gf that things are much better there than the early '90’s. All the kids passed their reading recently and the(1992) 7:45 AM holdup of two teachers in the parking lot was probably just an isolated thing.

samclem I thought you’d be the one to get it

Apparently some councilman’s kids go to this school so hopefully that is a good sign.

Captain Amazing are you part of some sort of “League of Captains” that makes you privy to such info?

Mr. Slant - thanks for all the effort. I came up with those same results from my searches but none of those people seemed to be affiliated with Cleveland or Captain-ness.

samclem’s got it.

I just wanted to say that I attened Captain Authur Roth for 1st and 2nd grade. I have fond memories of that school  Tell your brother’s gf welcome to the Glenville neighborhood!
