Who is Susan Spungen... really?

Okay, this is an odd question, and I know it. But it’s been bugging me, and this is the place to ask it. Susan Spungen was Martha Stewart’s editorial director of some kind for 12 years, and she’s written cookbooks that have been very well reviewed. But my question is… is she ALSO actually Nancy Spungen’s younger sister? (Yes, the “Sid and Nancy,” Nancy.) I haven’t seen any information on this, but Susan has the same name, is from Philadelphia, is about the right age, and looks similar to the teenage pictures of Nancy’s sister that I’ve seen. Does anyone know anything about this?

  • Has two siblings, Suzy (b. 1959) and David (b. 1961).
Her mother, Deborah Spungen, has written a book about her ("And I Don't Want To Live This Life")

From Nancy Spungen’s bio on imdb. Not sure if it’s the same one though.

I’m going to say yes. I’m looking at Deborah Spungen’s book “And I Don’t Want to Live This Life” right now, and Nancy did indeed have a sister named Susan who is pictured in a few of the photos in the book. It’s definitely the same person.

Susan Spungen

Young Nancy

I did a little more digging, and yes, Susan Spungen is Nancy’s sister. Wow.

I always loved Deborah Spungen’s book… and I actually wondered what happened to Nancy’s brother and sister. Apparently, Susan had some problems earlier, so it’s good to see that she’s made a life for herself. It’s a happy Christmas story!

Not entirely on-topic, but hell, it’s Cafe Society, so it’s not entirely off –

Best inadvertant double feature ever: The night I rented Sid and Nancy and Sunset Boulevard.

Deborah Spungen actually mentions Sunset Boulevard in her book. She says that Sid’s idea of a solo career was as pathetic of Norman Desmond’s idea of a comeback.

Maybe I shall put new lyrics to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s "Sunset Boulevard"l, and make it “Sid & Nancy: The Musical.”

I remember reading that. I wondered what happened to the brother and sister of nancy. Is their mother still alive?

So, do you think she gave Martha any pointers before Martha went to jail?
