Who reads Dick Tracy?

I don’t. But I’m wondering, are there actually people that read the comic strip in the paper? My understanding is that every day the strip moves along, like a soap opera, whereas most comics (like Garfield) are each sefl-contained, is that correct? If so, who keeps up with it? How could anyone ever pick up the back story? In short, why does Dick Tracy continue to get published?

Does it? I haven’t seen Dick Tracy in the comics for years.

I think the way people keep (or kept) up with it is that a new story “arc” starts every month or so letting new people get involved in the story. The detailed back story probably comes out as neccessary.

How much of the “back story” is still valid anyway? Are the magnetic space coupes from the '60s and '70s still around? How about the moon people?

If ever a strip deserved to die with dignity, but has been kept alive long past that point, it is Dick Tracy. Chester Gould no longer writes it, knowing the backstor is not nessary, the current people have erased it.

Moon Maid was killed by a car bomb about a decade ago, there was a brief mention that her father was breaking off all relations to earth. With her went all the cool gadgets. I think that Dick used the two-way-wrist-computer for a few more years, but I don't belive that he still does.

No Dick Tracy is no longer a guy who fights bizzare villans using nifty things like two-way-wrist-radios and magnetic space coupes. He is just a bitter old man who happens to be a cop. Tess, who was once known as "Trueheart" (yes I know, it was her name) has even had an affair!

Somone really needs to pull the plug on this strip and let us remember how much fun it used to be.
