Who should replace Stephen Colbert for the slot after TDS?

Just rotate in reruns of different shows everyday. It would at least get people to tune in to see what’s on. It would be easy to do and easy to replace when they have something better for the slot.

Cenac was my first thought and I like the idea. I think he could carry it.

Not Jason Jones please. That would suck.

I’ll partially disagree. His cohorts could fill up more time, and his interviews could run longer. But I’ll partially agree also, it’s a lot of time to fill with this style of entertainment on a daily basis.

Who’s that funny Marine? Rigg? I love him even though I don’t know his name. He should do a Comedy Central style Mail Call. Maybe even lure R. Lee Ermey over from the History Channel.

They’re not going to expand The Daily Show to an hour after all these years. There are tons of other options and quality voices they could bring in, and I expect most of them would also cost less because they wouldn’t have Jon Stewart’s clout.

I’ve got someone who might could handle it.Jimmy Dore. He’d need a lot of backup, and he’d need to dump some of his present crew, but he’s smart and funny and has tons of experience skewering politicos.

I’d totally watch that. And it’s Rob Riggle.

ETA: I think the folks saying CC won’t (or shouldn’t) do a political show to fill the slot are correct. It’ll be interesting to see what they do with the opportunity.

I may be the only one but I think Ricky Gervais could pull it off quite well.

Larry Wilmore

If we are sticking with Daily show correspondents, I think some kind of John Hodgman vs Larry Wilmore show could be fun. Lots of snide sniping back and forth. Call it The Grey Zone, or is that too edgy?

I say bring in Amy Schumer and have her play an Ann Coulter type.

Admittedly, Ann Coulter may hard to parody, but considering Fox News penchant for right-wing icy blondes it could work.

I like that idea.

So a female rip off of the Colbert Report? Not sure I can get behind that. A) Weak imagination-wise B) It would set it up for constant direct comparison to a well loved show.

I think it would be off-putting.
Colbert worked because although he was a parody he was loveable in a weird way; even a parody of Coulter would be an unlikeable obnoxious harpy.

I wasn’t a Colbert or Daily Show fan back when his show started. What was the feeling when he left TDS? Was the general belief that he could pull off his own show, or did people think he would be too weak?

I agree with some others somewhere up there ^^^^ that none of the current correspondents from TDS seem strong enough.

Now that I think about it, if Amy did a parody of Gretchen Carlson or Megyn Kelly it could be really funny.

Right, it doesn’t have to be Ann Coulter, or a real person. Colbert was generic conservative wingnut, somewhat focused on Bill O’Reilly, but not an impression of him. The same can be done with a woman emulating any and all of the conservative crowd of women that appear on Fox News.

Agreed, good point.

Yep! I hope CC reads this. Great idea.

I don’t think another conservative parody host is the way to go – I think they should come up with something new.

Just playing with ideas in my head, this is what I came up with: Wyatt Cenac is a hard-hitting, cigarette smoking, whiskey drinking reporter in the most serious sense. Truth is his game. No matter what it takes, he will get to the bottom of the story. All done very deadpan.

And most of the time, his journalistic instincts take him in exactly the wrong direction – maybe he goes after the secretary because she gives him the evil eye when the businessman is obviously a crook, for example.
