Who should replace Stephen Colbert for the slot after TDS?

Do you think they still have Dave Chappelle’s number?

I don’t know who my favorite is in this discussion. I think it’s Cenac, partly because he has a conversational style and because I miss him as a Daily Show correspondent. But I think he might have a show on AMC soon, which means he might not be available

I am sure Amy Schumer isn’t going to give up her own show to do something that is basically someone else’s idea. Her show seems to be doing well. And I agree they will not do something so similar to TCR.

I would watch a show starring Cenac or Wilmore or Schaal or Jessica Williams or Aasif Mandvi, who I think is the most versatile of the bunch and therefore the least likely to want a talk show. Somehow he’s the only one nobody is suggesting, as far as I can see. I don’t get that. I don’t think he would settle for a talk show when he likes acting, but still. A Kristen Schaal talk show might be great if she were allowed to get super weird with it, but maybe that’s more of an Adult Swim idea. I would watch a Jessica Williams series, but I don’t think she’s the best choice for a talk show. I love Hodgman and he is almost always playing one character, sort of like Colbert, but I wonder if he would want to be in front of the camera that much. When he’s not on TDS he has moved away from his Deranged Millionaire character and he’s doing more standup and storytelling with his podcast and Secret Society. He got into performing later in life than these other people and I think he’d rather have a nerdy niche audience than a TV show. If you haven’t seen his Ragnarok stand up special, though, check it out. It’s the nerdiest standup comedy thing I’ve ever seen and it’s hilarious.

Having brought up the idea of Amy Schumer as a parody of Ann Coulter, on second thought, I agree with you and Zoid.

That’s a better idea.

I also think Schumer, who get nearly the coverage I think she deserves could pull it off.

Whatever they do, it’ll have to be completely, radically different from Colbert because of inevitable comparisons. That’s as far as my thinking goes. I’d love for TDS to be expanded, because Jon could do more substantial interviews, but I doubt that it’ll go that way.

I can’t stand Samantha Bee but if she got her own show, I wouldn’t have to put up with her on TDS and I just wouldn’t watch the new show - that would work for me.

I’m just sorry John Oliver got the gig at HBO before this happened - he’d have been a natural to fill the spot. Oh well…

A Conservative Pundit Parody show will immediately be decried as a Colbert rip-off. Ain’t gonna happen.
They could do a political comedy show with a comedian who actually is a conservative. It would at least be fun to watch SDMB heads explode.

I’d really like to see Kristen Schaal. I always love when she’s on The Daily Show. Last time she was on I thought to myself “Goddamnit, has she written a book yet?” (apparently, she has co-written one with her husband so far)

I’m not making a case for or against him, but I’m sure Chris Hardwick is making sure his name is in the running. His current show follows The Colbert Report, so it follows the model of “Move the Host of Late Night into The Tonight Show” (admittedly not an unflawed model). His current show isn’t a talk show, but he’s done talk shows in the past and think he would jump at the chance to do it on a legit network. Something that would bring in his Nerdist fans but appeal to a wider more diverse audience.

I thought he could pull it off but wondered how long he could keep it entertaining. For me the Colbert report joke did wane about 2 years ago but no shortage of people kept enjoying it.

The Daily Show benefits from the change-over in staff. Colbert will probably benefit moving to a different format, his interview this week of Jane Goodall was wonderful and brilliant and if he keeps interesting guests mixed in with the mandatory celeb interviews he could do very well in his new gig.

How about H. Jon Benjamin in character as Sterling Archer? That would be an awesome talk show.

Well, I’ll cast another vote for John Oliver, despite the HBO show. Bad timing, that . . .

I love the idea of parodying the Fox News blondes, but I don’t see how you’d pull it off without it seeming like a female duplicate of Colbert.

Mandvi was my first thought, and I was surprised not to see him mentioned until so far down into the thread. I’d love to see him in his own show, no matter what format they decided to go with.

But this idea has great merit as well. For precisely this reason.

Yeah, a half hour of Bee flipping her hair would be hard to take. Damn shame about Oliver. His DS sub job was excellent.

Assuming a TDS style political show Cenac, Mandvi and Oliver could do it. I’d love to see Lewis Black do it, but I don’t think he’s interested in doing a nightly show.

Are there any popular ones? Not snarking, I actually can’t think of any popular right-wing comedians. Comedy tends to be a very liberal industry, as far as I can tell.

What about bringing over Eric Andre with Hannibal Burress to host a higher budget version of their current show. Or what about Nathan Fielder from Nathan for You or W Kamau Bell? I would see if Rob Corddry wants a nightly show. There are also a few standups who I could see doing well like John Mulaney, Neal Brennan, Bill Burr, Joe Rogan, or Marc Maron. The latter three have a pretty built in audience because if their podcasts.

They’ll probably cancel it and start a new show. You can’t have the Colbert Report with Fake Colbert.

Steve Carell.

Seriously. Short of some voiceover work, his movie career has tanked. He’s a few flops away from disappearing like Mike Myers. There’s a very real value to a star’s Q rating in being on TV four nights a week. The show would be a whole new format, though I’m not sure what would play to his strengths best.

Mike Myers rules, he is on track to be the highest grossing actor ever. Like 8 out of 10 years he had the top grossing movie of the year (Waynes World, Austin Powers, and Shrek franchises.)

D.L. Hughley for political/social
Lewis Black for whatever he wants
David Cross for a low cost option
Bill Burr on conspiracy theories

Ruled. Past tense. He can’t open a movie after Love Guru. Now he’s going back to the well for a 4th Austin Powers. If that flops, he’s nobody. A rich nobody.

Not even close. Boxofficemojo.com has all the numbers and they tell a different story.

Wayne’s World was #8 for 1992.
Wayne’s World 2 was #29 for 1993.
Austin Powers 1 was #36 for 1997.
Austin Powers 2 was #4 for 1999.
Austin Powers 3 was #7 for 2002.

The Shrek movies were 3,1,2,8 but nobody really credits the voice actors in the same way as live action movies. Does anyone say that Ellen DeGeneris and Albert Brooks are huge movie stars because Finding Nemo was the #2 movie of 2003? Ludicrous. Frozen is going to be one of the top ten all time worldwide grossers and I’ll bet you can’t even name the voice talent. Cartoons work because they are good or bad cartoons, not because of who voices them.

And even counting the Shrek movies, Myers ranks #38 on the highest grossing actor list. He’ll keep sinking every year as bigger hits come out.

He had a couple of nice successes and some good voice work. But he’s disappeared and it will be a huge surprise if he ever comes back.

No, he isn’t. The Office was very popular, Despicable Me was a big hit. Anchorman 2 was probably a disappointment but it made money. And he was good playing against type in The Way Way Back, for what it’s worth. This is not someone whose career is in the tank. I like him and I like Ricky Gervais, who someone else mentioned. But they are movie stars and they probably cost way more than Comedy Central would want to spend.

The Office is a fond memory, and Carell an even more distant one owing to his early departure.

Anchorman is a Will Ferrell vehicle first and last. Everything else he’s lead has been a dog. Get Smart. Date Night. And of course Evan Almighty. He’s on his way to Myers/Sandler toxicity. That said, I like him. He’s got serious chops. Shame the big screen didn’t pan out, but TV would love to have him back.

Jeez, it went off the air less than a year ago. Carell left the show two years before that. The bottom line is this: at one point just a couple of years ago I think he was making more than $10 million per movie and was also starring in one of the biggest hits on TV. Now he’s done some smaller movies (and yes, a few that haven’t been big hits) and starred in a huge voice action franchise he stars in. On that basis it’s hard to say his career is in trouble. And even his middling stuff has never inspired anything like the scorn that greeted The Love Guru or every single movie Adam Sandler makes. If he wanted to do a talk show he could probably make one, but I doubt he does, and he certainly doesn’t need to.
