I found the incident both embarrassing and amusing and I did my part to egg them on even while mocking the idea.
The original offer seems inaccessible at the moment but this post has links to where it used to be, at least.

Stay, or go, but whatever you do, do it for your reasons. Be good to yourself. Don’t let frustration lead you to hateful, and ultimately self-destructive, thoughts and behaviors. If you do that then you’ve lost yourself, and you’re the only one who, ultimately, will be looking out for you. Living your life to spite others is a hard way to be happy.

In my defense, my feelings were (and still are) somewhat mixed; a heady fusion of thinking it was stupid and undignified and yet demanding it be played out for maximum laughs.
It’s the kind of conflict one can embrace only when the stakes are meaningless. I had vaguely similar feelings about Trump when he was a candidate but it became both sad and deadly serious when he actually got elected.
Yeah I dont really understand this tendency for Dopers to claim en masse to not even know who long time regular posters are, when those posters violate board etiquette. I’m a pothea- a medical marijuana patient- and I have no trouble remembering even relatively obscure posters. Because I pay attention to not just what is being said but who is saying it. I thought that was normal social communication. Isnt it? When you hear something, whether it be stupid or smart, how do you not notice who the comment is coming from? So many here like to use the Ignore function. How does anyone even know who to put on ignore if no one knows who the fuck anyone else is here?

I often don’t remember people unless I’ve interacted with them or there’s something particularly interesting about them.
I’ve been here since 1989 and can remember particulars about maybe 40 regular posters. Tops. I’m just easily confused by names. A few horrible ones stand out, a few I’ve met in real life, some of the admins and moderators, and a few good ones or ones with particular hobbyhorses. Even ones I think I know well I sometimes get confused on.
