Who was the newspaper/media mogul who died on a boat in the Thames many years ago.

My memory of this is sketchy, but I remember a famous (or rather infamous, like Rupert Murdoch infamous) newspaper/media mogul type guy who died either on a boat, or drowned, or something like that, in the Thames, like 10 or 15 years ago. Google isn’t helping.

Does this ring any bells for UK dopers?

Robert Maxwell but it wasn’t in the Thames, it was off the Canary Islands

Bingo! Robert Maxwell. Thanks.

Don’t know why I thought it was the Thames. That’s memory for ya.

It was only a couple of years after the Marchioness was hit and sank in the Thames, maybe you conflated the two events in your memory?

Yeah, Maxwell was stealing from the employee pension fund to keep his empire afloat (sorry). It was starting to come crashing down around him, so speculation is he took the easy way out.

Probably. In fact I think I had gone as far as thinking that Maxwell was one of the people who died in the Marchioness incident. Silly brain.
