Who Was "Uncle Albert" and Why Are We "Sorry"?

This old “Wings” song puzzles me:
“we’re so sorry, Uncle Alber…but we haven’t done a bloody thing all day”.
What was Pal McCartney singing about?
Did he actually have an Uncle named Albert?

wiki

Huh, just bought that (solo, not Wings) CD yesterday. The wiki link doesn’t really explain his sorrow or association with an American admiral…

They’re just words. They fit the melody. There is no hidden meaning. There is no backstory.

I believe I heard Paul explain one day that they were at his [Albert’s] house bored out of their minds, put some tea on, got distracted, forgot about it and something caught fire.

Yeah, don’t look for depth in McCartney’s lyrics, just listen to the pretty songs.

That’s not a dig. He’s written boatloads and boatloads of pretty songs that I’m more than happy to hum along with. Beautiful music.

I wish I could make songs out of boring shit that happens to me.

LOL. I wrote a song once based on randomly sitting on my porch reeeeeeally late at night and wondering WTF the various people that passed by were doing walking on my street so late at night.

I know of another singer whose entire song consists of the repeated refrain “spider bug on bed”.

He was a crazy guy who liked to tell jokes and float up to the ceiling to drink his tea.

And we’re sorry for pointing out that he sounded like Wally Gator when he talked.

We’re so sorry, Uncle Albert
We’re so sorry that we’ve caused you any pain
We’re so sorry, Uncle Albert
(But you must admit you talk like Wally Gator, just the same)

If you’re going to go looking for ‘meaning’ in Paul McCartney’s lyrics, you’re likely to be searching for a long, long time. Especially his love songs…I’ve always found them to be rather ‘silly’.

Reminds me of when my friend John played a song he had just written for a couple of us one night. He played guitar and sang this awesome song, but all the lyrics were in Spanish. When he finished I said “I didn’t know you spoke Spanish! What’s the song about?”

“I don’t speak Spanish.”

“You don’t? Well, what’s the song about? And how did you write all those lyrics in Spanish?”

“I sat down with my girlfriend’s Spanish textbook and copied random sentences from it, then just sang them to the song’s melody.”

I can still play that song on guitar, although I never did learn any of the lyrics. I guess technically, John never did either.

Interesting. Can you post a link to Sir Paul saying that?

Has this song inspired more threads than any other?

Right after you post a cite of Sir Paul saying he’s ever put a hidden meaning in any of his lyrics.

I was gonna guess a. Einstein, and b. nuclear everything.

Einstein didn’t talk like Wally Gator, though. He talked like Ludwig von Drake.

Your turn.

If you’re talking hidden meanings in the lyrics, we need to know which Paul you’re talking about. Presumably the replacement who’s still alive?

But, seriously, keep in mind we’re trying to find meaning in lyrics from the guy who brought us “Plasticine porters with looking glass eyes”.

That one was John’s.

I never made that claim. You *did *make a claim, I’m asking you to back it up. Or did you just pull it out of your posterior?

Sure, Einstein didn’t.

But Uncle Albert did…
