Oh, THAT was Stan Freberg? I knew he did the voice for Pete Puma…I thought the character you mentioned was from a “Screwball Squirrel” cartoon (from MGM). “Duh…I HAD a little friend…but he don’t move no more.” The dead Screwball Squirrel holds up a sign reading, “Sad ending, isn’t it?”
Well the greatest has to be Elmer. But I like some of the lesser used ones, too:
-Wile E. Coyote, Super Genius
-The Tortoise (I forget his name.)
-The Gremlin (IIRC, the Gremlin and the Tortoise are the only ones who ever got the better of Bugs.)
-The Peter-Lorre Mad Scientist character
-The little penguin (more of a foil than a foe)
Carpe hoc!
The tortoise’s name was Cecil.
Elmer was great only when the writer’s gave him a lot of L’s to say: “That was a wovewy weg of wamb.” “Owivia DeHaviwand?” And, of course, “You wascawy wabbit!”
Martin the Martian??? Pete Puma??? Man, they have got to be the two most ANNOYING Looney Tunes characters ever drawn. Yeeesh.
Yosemite Sam. Closely followed by Elmer J. Fudd. Taz and Wile E. Coyote tie for third.
And Foghorn Leghorn (although he wasn’t really a Bugs nemesis).
“Owls will deafen us with their incessant hooting!” W. Smithers
Marvin the Martian was my fave. I also loved the robot that Elmer Fudd (?) unleashed on Bugs. You know, the one where Bugs made the robot rusty by running around in circles around a sprinkler? Absolutely hilarious! I’m still laughing.
I’ll have to give Witch Hazel her due here. In “Broomstick Bunny,” she whipped up a potion to make her rival (Bugs in a witch costume) pretty! He tricked her into drinking it herself, and she turned into the kind of knockout who could make the wolf in the MGM cartoons propose to her on the spot!! Witch Hazel’s magic-mirror genie did a Bob Hope “rowr!” when he saw Witch Hazel’s new look, and as Bugs called them, they were “A genie with light brown hair chasin’ a flyin’ sorceress!”
Bugs actually got too conceited at the end of the cartoon run. I mean in the beginning he didn’t always win.
Once he was asking Granny “Who’ll play the Easter Bunny?” (Daffy wanted it of course) I mean for God’s sake his is the ONLY rabbit in the series. Who do you think will get the part. He was too self serving at the end.
I liked ol’ Wile E. Coyote when he was after Bugs. For some reason he lost the power of speech going up against the Roadrunner. Must be from the chemicals he snorted from all the Acme Products he ordered over the years.
“…send lawyers, guns, and money…”

Some of my favorites were the lesser-known one-timers such as:
The Vampire episode - Bugs singing “ladadadidadaladidadaladida hocus poooocus” and the vampire changes into the bat at a most inopportune moment (i.e. with a huge rock overhead) HILARIOUS!
The SuperBugs toon - the cowboy (I think his name was Dastardly Dan or something similar) and his horse were absolutely idiotic - a perfect counterpart to Bugs’ savvy.
When was the orange monster’s name revealed.
Monsters, there such innnnnteresting people, just the other day I said to my girlfriend Hazel, I said Hazel, now monsters, they must lead such innnnnteresting lives, Oh the places you must go an the things you must see, my stars…
