That’s the whole point of the series, man… God isn’t much of a GOD. He’s vain, selfish and jealous and fuck’s up people’s lives, just because he can…ultimately he’s a coward and a bully.
…at least in Preacherville.

Well, we’re not talking about his character flaws - which might make for interesting reading. It’s the stupidity and impotence of the character.
But I’l read some of it eventually, and perhaps open a discussion on it at that time. Watch this space.
More-or-less what CandidGamera said. The idea of God having character flaws is dramatically intriguing. The Xian God, though, whom it seems is the God in the Preacher series, is said to be omnipotent and omniscient. The God character from Preacher, based on what I’ve read in this thread might as well have been written as a superscience-using space alien who passes himself off as God.
Like CandidGamera, I’ll probably pick up a volume or two to see what all the excitement was about; but knowing in advance that it has what seems like a dreadfully silly ending rather dampens my anticipation.
Without spoilering the ending – I suspect those of you who haven’t read it will be satisfied with how the series wraps up.
Thank Og we’ve mostly talked about Cassidy’s nature as a vampire and quibbling whether his surviving the Saint’s shot was a mistake or not, and the resolution of how God dies. This is, as someone else pointed out, less than 5% of the story, and ultimately not the point of the series.
Sooo… any fictional character more powerful than Death of the Endless?
Her big brother Fate. Death gets you once. Fate controls everyone’s every action all the time.
… technically that should be Destiny…
Thought about it, but Destiny doesn’t do anything. He kinda just holds the big book that charts the course of your life - and it should be noted, charts all possible variants.
And Death takes him in the end.
You should really, really, really shut up about Preacher until you read it. Most of the stuff you’re “complaining” about is either inconsequential to the story or is explained. Like someone already said, he’s NOT much of a god, and that’s part of the point of the series, so you sound pretty stupid pointing that out.
What about Dream? He tricked a big bad demon into a bottle once. And Lucifer gave up Hell so Dream wouldn’t kick his ass.
The first one is clever and tricksy; as to the second, I didn’t get that motivation at all from Lucifer’s abdication. Lucifer did what Lucifer wanted to do, and managed to put the burden of Hell’s Key on Dream, temporarily.
Dream is also forbidden from taking mortal life except in rare circumstances; Dream’s also stupid enough to put off some of his power into objects that can be taken from him. These, amnong other reasons, make me consider him considerably less than Death.
*God * from The Bible
Pssh…he couldn’t even get himself down off a cross. Spider-Man could probably kick his ass.
Cool your jets, Cisco. It’s a comic book, nothing more. I based what I posted on how fans of the series made it sound to me. If you want to continue in the same angry tone, please do open a Pit thread.
This is an official “cool your jets” from the Moderator, Cisco. In this forum, we have polite discussions. We don’t tell people to shut up and we don’t call anyone stupid. You’ve been around long enough to know better.
While he could’ve gone about it a bit more elegantly, Cisco has a point. I usually like what you have to say, CandidGamera, but this time it seems like you’re baiting people for an argument. You and Scumpup really should read at least a few books of the series then come back and argue it in CS…I’ll be happy to open a thread just for this discussion.
Admittedly, Cisco’s been saying in this thread what I’ve been thinking, though he’s had the cajones to post what I didn’t. Let’s just keep it civil, shall we?

Not at all. I’m making conclusions based on the evidence given to me. If the conclusion is wrong, those that have read the material can give me the evidence I am lacking. Expressing my conclusion and sticking to it in the face of underwhelming evidence is not baiting. Can we please end the hijack now?
Indeed. 1920’s-style death rays are in place. The thread has been secured. Back to the original OP.

I knew I was out of line and I shouldn’t have been saying that stuff in this forum, and I apologize. I would, however, like the record to show that this is my first warning of any kind in 5 years and I strongly feel that CandidGamera was deliberately baiting someone (not necessarily me, or anyone in particular, though I accept blame for taking the bait.)
The charting is an act of conscious control, and the control of the destiny of absolutely everything is indeed “doing something.” Oh, it’s not as flashy as being there for someone’s death, destruction, despair, dream or desire, but it is moreso an act of diligence because Destiny already knows the outcome of the actions of the other six Endless. He is a keeper of secrets and knowledge and knowledge is power. Not for nothing is Destiny known to be “the most meticulous of the Endless, the most diligent in their execution.” It’s a damn sight more work than just holding the book he’s chained to.
The book on rare occassions, fails to chart some rare paths, as noted by Delirium, and this is not disputed by Destiny. This would appear to be an allusion to the Book of Cerements that tells what to do should one of the Endless is killed or dies.
Let’s all read a little Gaiman, hm? "Walk any path in Destiny’s garden and you will be forced to choose, not once but many times. The paths fork and divide. With each step you take through Destiny’s garden, you make a choice; and every choice determines future paths. However, at the end of a lifetime of walking you might look back, and see only one path stretching out behind you, or look ahead, and see only darkness.
Sometimes you dream about the paths of Destiny, and speculate, to no purpose. Dream about the paths you took and the paths you didn’t take… The paths diverge and branch and reconnect; some say not even Destiny himself knows where any way will take you, where each twist and turn will lead.
But even if Destiny could tell you, he will not. Destiny holds his secrets.
The garden of Destiny. You would know it if you saw it. After all, you will wander it until you die. Or beyond. For the paths are long, and even in death there is no ending to them."
Also: “Destiny is the oldest of the Endless; in the Beginning was the Word, and it was traced by hand on the first page of his book, before ever it was spoken aloud. Destiny is also the tallest of the Endless, to mortal eyes. There are some who believe him to be blind; whilst others, perhaps with more reason, claim that he has travelled far beyond blindness, that indeed, he can do nothing but see: that he sees the fine traceries the galaxies make as they spiral through the void that he watches the intricate patterns living things make on their journey through time. Destiny smells of dust and the libraries of night. He leaves no footprints. He casts no shadow.”
