Whoey Whoey Whoey? What What What?

During the summer olympics, the local team has been cheered on with the chant “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! Oy, Oy, Oy!”. Encouraging, perhaps, but not original. Back in England, when Mrs. Thatcher became unpopular, the chant was frequently “Maggie, Maggie, Maggie! Out, Out, Out!” Discouraging, perhaps, but again not original. I believe the original to be “Oggy, Oggy, Oggy! Oy, Oy, Oy!” However, I have NO idea where this comes from, who or what Oggy is/was, and whether Oy is a chant of pain, joy or what. if anyone can shed light on this I’d be grateful as my wife expects me to know this stuff. (For some reason she thinks us English people are intelligent  )

There was bit on this on NPR yesterday. The commentator reading the story said it came from some beer ad? or pub chant? something to do with a popular beer or beer establishment in England.

Anyone have any clues?

This relates back to the Old Testament, when Moses came down from the mountain and saw the Golden Calf. He exclaimed, “Piggy, piggy, piggy! Oy! Oy! Oy!” Somewhere along the line, the Talmud proclaiming this got misread to “Oggy.”

I should have added that Moses’ vision was not very good.

A popular TV series in the UK in the 1970s starred a Welsh comedian named Max Boyce, who used “Oggy, Oggy, Oggy, Oi! Oi! Oi!” as a sort of catchphrase. This, I suspect, is where it came to widespread or mainstream attention. However, whether he originated it, or whether it came from a rugby chant, I don’t know.

This is similar to Bill “The Fox” Foster’s chant before i downed a pint: “Ziggy Sockey, Ziggy Sockey, Hoy, Hoy, Hoy!”
