About a fortnight ago, my Clié N770C (UK version of N760) developed a fault with the digitiser (it lost accuracy and was impossible to properly calibrate). With only a couple of months to go on the warranty, Sony picked it up a week ago; it came back today with a brand new LCD screen and digitiser (as I should have expected, of course).
What I didn’t expect, however, is that the new screen is infinitely bettern than the old one; one of the big niggles with this model is that the gap between the plastic digitiser membrane and the glass was too big, making the whole thing mushy and inaccurate, and causing inaccuracies in entering text via graffiti.
Well, the new screen isn’t like that and has all the quality and ease of use as the original monochrome models, which were better (many people say) than genuine Palm devices.
So I’m glad it went wrong, really.
Cool, and one of the first times I have heard something positive about Sony customer service.
I managed to kill my six-months-old Visor Edge by filling the memory up to 100% and then - not having noticed that the memory was full - opening a document (which will create a small file, using additional memory). Instant reset cycle of doom …
After soft reset, hard reset, system reset achieved nothing I called Handspring support. They told me they would send a replacement unit, which they did within 5 days.
Even though my old unit came back to life once the battery was drained, I decided to keep the brand-spanking-new replacement unit.
The hi-res Sony Clié screens are very nice. However, I would not buy a Clié without having seen it first and tested in in differing light conditions. There have been some Cliés with very dim screens.
I look forward to the new generation of devices with Palm OS 5. The pictures that have leaked so far are looking great.
