I’ve watched both the original and the American pilot episodes of The Office and I didn’t enjoy them. The Invention of Lying sucked ass.
I loved Ricky in Ghost Town with Téa Leone, he plays a lonely, misanthropic dentist. The beginning is hilarious and even though it’s basically a romcom, it’s worth watching.
I’ve been enjoying HBO’s run of The Ricky Gervais Show, the animated bits really add to the radio show.
Gervais is no match for Eddie though, not even close.
It’s an apples and oranges comparison, really. Eddie Izzard is vastly superior as a stand-up comedian, but that isn’t Ricky Gervais’s main line of work. From what I have seen of Izzard the person, on panel shows and the like, he isn’t spontaneously funny like Gervais can be, and he doesn’t seem as warm. That said, I get irritated by Gervais laughing maniacally at minor things. Can seem a bit forced at times.
I got a bit Izzarded out some years ago, but I suppose that’s only because his shows were must-watch events. I just watched that Darth Vader clip linked to above and it reminded me how good he is. So I’m voting for Eddie.
Eddie over Ricky, no question. Eddie just has more range. When they’re both doing flat-out rambling, absurdist comedy I find Izzard’s style of humor and pitch a heck of a lot better than Gervais’s. On the flip side, Eddie’s also better at the “serious” type comedic roles. I’m really enjoying him in this season’s United States of Tara and I really do not believe Gervais could have handled that role.
My exposure to Gervais isn’t complete (haven’t seen The Office), but An idiot Abroad and his other stuff makes me think he’s just mean and vicious…Izzard hands down.
I’d vote Eddie every time. Not only is he hysterical in his standups, he’s also fairly good-natured - his comedy isn’t based on insulting people and making fun of them, for the most part (Phillip being the exception!) Also I love the historical standup. The bit with the Pilgrims and Indians always cracks me up, as does the Seige of Troy bits.
I also love his acting. He was fantastic in The Riches, and I’ve liked him in everything I’ve seen him in. He’s just all-around better. And it’s nice to know that even as he’s aged to the point where he doesn’t transvestite as much, he wasn’t a one-trick pony.
Gervaise strikes me as much more one-dimensional and meanspirited.
I found Dress to Kill to be very meh (is there something else I should try or is Izzard just not for me?). I liked Gervais’ HBO standup specials. And The Office, Extras Also the podcasts & An Idiot Abroad.
Izzard has some funny shit, but it seems like every time I watch his stand up there’s just a huge amount of filler. And even when he is funny, it’s not “haha!” funny, it’s smirk funny. So it’s like I smirk for a couple minutes, then sit there for ten minutes waiting for the next smirk-worthy joke while he stumbles around making stupid noises trying to elicit laughter. Check for it next time you watch him: There are huge gaps where even the audience isn’t laughing.
Gervais is hilarious. Though I prefer Louis CK and (don’t hurt me) Mitch Hedberg.
Same here. I felt like I was watching a bad parody of bad standup comedy.
And the cross dressing, to me, screams “attention whore.” He’s not gay, and he doesn’t get off on it sexually…so WTF is the point? Seems to me to be a novelty act designed to draw publicity.
