Who's seeing FOTR & TT EEs in theaters?

I’m talking the limited release of the extended editions in 126 theaters in the US. It began 12/5 with FOTR EE which will end on 12/11, only to have TT EE open on 12/12. That will run for a mere 4 days!

I didn’t even try to get Trilogy Tuesday tix, as I knew I’d have to blow off two days of work and run the risk of blood clots in the legs to see them all in one day.

BUT: The family and & saw FOTR EE this past friday. It was wonderful to see it on the big screen as is intended to be! I’ve gotta get me one of them big screens. The only fly in the ointment was the fact that I was on call and had to exit the flick 4 times to answer pages! ARRRRGGGHHHH! And since I’m on call for a week at a time, I couldn’t see it on a day without being on.

So this friday I’ll be off call, and seeing TT EE on the bigscreen, then next wednesday I’ll burn some personal hours and cut out of work early and see ROTK! Then I’ll see it again on Friday!

Rapture!

My wife told me that she wanted to take me to Springfield, MO to see FOTR EE, TTT EE, then ROTK all in one sitting. Apparently they also provide food and drink during this extravaganza, but I’m not sure I could sit through 12+ hours of movies with THAT many LOTR geeks.

I could. Hell, the geeks are half the entertainment.

I recall a raucous night, back in the seventies, when I made a point of driving clear out to the dark side of the moon, specifically because this particular drive-in movie theatre was showing all five Planet Of The Apes movies, back to back, with fifteen-minute intermissions between them.

It was a grand and glorious thing, all the more so because the drive-ins were doomed, and we didn’t know it. It was a terrific snapshot of that particular point in our horrible culture. It was… man, I don’t know how to describe it. By four in the morning, we were jumping up and down on the roofs of cars and making ape noises. Someone was actually selling bananas, car to car. We didn’t NEED drugs to get squirrelly, and it was fun.

Somewhere out there, during the credits of the last movie, someone shrieked “Go human, not ape!”

Someone else replied “Shut your filthy jaws, you damn dirty ape!”

“You bastards! You blew it all up!”

And everywhere, there were punch-drunk, groggy drivers in hysterics.

It was a wonderful moment. It is a golden memory.

And how often does this sort of thing sweep the world? Not often enough. I’M gonna be there when they show all three back-to-back, and you’d damn well better have your cell phone turned off if you’re sittin’ anywhere near ME. My quarterstaff’s a good seven feet long, and that hunk of quartz jammed in the business end is SHARP…

I went this evening, and I didn’t even know about it. I just wanted to go to a film of some sort. I have to say, it was great, but the theater was only… 10% full?

And is it necessary to put those red dots on films that are already out on DVD?

The limited release stuff and sneak preview stuff never shows around this little backwater:(

I think we’d probably do it anyway, except that we’d have to find babysitting arrangements for three kids, not only for the length of time the movies run, but also for transportation time. We’d be gone 17 hours, minimum. That’s just too damn much hassle.

I’m using two days to drive 130 miles for Trilogy Tuesday. But what is this “risk of blood clots” of which you speak and do you, as an M.D., have recommendations to lessen the danger?

Been there, done that! http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=216490&highlight=clots

See my second post in the above link for tips to stay healthy during the marathon!

Son of Dex has his tickets to see the marathon in LA. I was all psyched to see the two extended editions on big screen, and now am totally bummed – it’s only playing at one theatre in all of Chicago area, and we’re travelling part of the time so we couldn’t see TWO TOWERS anyway, so there’s no way we can manage 'em. Damn.

I saw FOTR on Saturday afternoon, and it was just amazing seeing everything on the big screen. I cried when Boromir died, even though I’ve seen his death dozens of times now. This upcoming Saturday I’ll be enjoying TTT in theaters.

Where I was it, it was about 1/3 full. That was the 4pm Friday show, and they were lined up to get into the 8pm show. Box Office Mojo says they took in $473K for 126 theaters over the weekend. Not bad for a limited release flick which has been available on DVD for over a year.

This Friday awaits! And I’ve got my ROTK opening day tix.

I hate to admit that I am going to the three movie extravaganza next Tuesday. I am not a big LOTR geek, but my sister-in-law is and I didn’t want to miss an opportunity to spend the entire day at the theatre.

I am really looking forward to seeing how it all ends, because I have never read the books and have managed to miss finding out what happens until now.
